There's one riff in a certain Sonic game (either Sonic 1 or 2) that sounds a lot like Smooth Criminal.

I know Michael Jackson was supposed to compose the Sonic 3 soundtrack so maybe this was an early tip of the hat to MJ.

Sounds likely. It really surprised me that this never got press outside of the gamin world, one would expect that after he died everyone would have tried to get a hand on anything they could.

And Team Teamwork's VINYL FANTASY and OCCARINA OF RHYME mash-ups.
There's also Team Teamwork's whole album "Super Nintendo Sega Genesis" with several mashups. The Dr. Octagon mashup on there with Yoshi's Island music is really great.

David Bowie is in the game Omikron: The Nomad Soul. Years later, he reprised the music from that game in his album Hours.

I've got a list of songs that contain riffs that remind me of certain tracks from legend of zelda a link to the past, let alone other songs.
