I really tried getting into Dead Space
I really tried getting into Dead Space
I have no idea why, but let me say game is pretty boring imo. Played Resident Evil games almost all my life and I thought this game will do as I love sci fi movies and all, but why do I feel bobbed down by this game? Design quality is pretty good, but there's something about it I can't seem to pinpoint what's wrong with it. Maybe it's the pacing and there's something about the rag doll effect plus the dismembering of any thing seems a bit of a tofu for me.
Re: I really tried getting into Dead Space
Dead Space is more like an entertaining action game than a horror game for me. If you're looking for a Resident Evil 1-2-3 in Dead Space, you're simply looking in the wrong place.
Every new big-budget "horror" game released nowadays can be best classified as action titles, not (survival) horror. Dead Space and Resident Evil 5/6 are prime examples of that.
If you don't like DS1, try renting/borrowing DS2. The sequel improves on DS1 on almost everything, especially the pacing.

Re: I really tried getting into Dead Space
when it comes to RE, I'm very flexible. I do know the difference between the classics and the new of RE, but Dead Space just seems to do something I don't entirely like because I don't feel a strong connection between the playable character and the entire game (or other characters, environment, etc). I did try Dead Space 2 awhile back and it was ok....only because I thought the voice of Isaac added to the game a bit. Cinematic cutscenes were present in DS2, which Dead Space didn't have but the conversations you often had with you and whoever you were "listeing" to. A lot of the character designs seem wasted on the main character alone and not a lot of it is shown on other characters like Nicole and whoever, which is why I thought cutscenes would've helped DS1. DS2 kind improves on that just by a little bit.

if you want the resident evil experience in dead space play it on hardcore mode i think you get only 3 saves in the entire game and very limited ammo, not sure if this mode is only in dead space 2 though been awhile since i played it.

If you're looking for a "Resident Evil set in space" and the scifi horror theme is more important to you than the Resident Evil gameplay formula (tank controls+seeing your character/no first person view) then try out System Shock 2 and Enemy Zero if you're dissatisfied with the Dead Space games. I've heard that Alien vs Predator (the 1999 PC game, not the Jaguar game) is very scary and athmospheric, but I haven't tried it out myself yet so I dont know if it has puzzles or not. Doom 3 might also intrest you. I personally think it lacked proper horror athmosphere and pacing. It just had monsters popping out from darkness. But atleast it's set on a space station and it has light puzzle solving.

Re: I really tried getting into Dead Space
this is very similar to another game I was having problems with, Assassin's Creed 1, where I felt the lack of cinematic cutscenes was a little disappointing for the game. What I notice is that this style is often true with most Western developers where they are afraid cutscenes would get in the way (maybe costly) of the gameplay, so often times they just do what they do best or what they deem as enough or necessary. After the first game, Ubisoft just decided to add some cutscenes in Assassin's Creed 2 and onwards. This is a pattern I see in Dead Space and possibly more in DS3. The changes are pretty drastic when just a few scenes in AC2 or DS2 can get you hooked with the character and from time to time you start seeing it develop. I'm glad Western developers are starting to see the importance of it.

Re: I really tried getting into Dead Space
Dead Space got hyped up a lot simply due to the rather weak state of survival horror games at the time of it's release. Same as how overrated Xenoblade was. The state of jrpgs being so poor right now people were just desperate for their savior game.
In retrospect, Dead Space wasn't really that amazing, but standards for the genre had gotten much lower back then

I agree. I still enjoyed Xenoblade, especially after so long.Gamerforlife wrote:Dead Space got hyped up a lot simply due to the rather weak state of survival horror games at the time of it's release. Penumbra: Black Plague, Penumbra: Requiem and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (not a 100% horror game but has great athmosphere though) were all released that same year so it wasn't all badGamerforlife wrote:Dead Space got hyped up a lot simply due to the rather weak state of survival horror games at the time of it's release.

Re: I really tried getting into Dead Space
Maybe not in the PC gaming world, but I don't think there was much great stuff on console. I think Dead Space came out after Resident Evil 5 too, and a lot of people were dissappointed by that. Dead Space must have seemed amazing by comparisonMenegrothx wrote:Both Penumbra: Black Plague and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (not a 100% horror game but has great athmosphere though) were released that same year so it wasn't all badGamerforlife wrote:Dead Space got hyped up a lot simply due to the rather weak state of survival horror games at the time of it's release.
