Smile: Ok this is from earlier this week, but I'm still smiling, cause I'm a foodie. Went to Chicago and had some great food!

Girl and the Goat - Apparently this was opened by some Top Chef winner? It's amazing, that's all I know. Think slightly snooty tapas bar and you're pretty close to the mark. Fun stuff like "pig face" and "goat shank" on the menu. Loved it. Apparently you need reservations 2 months in advance and we walked in and got a table.

Lou Malnati's - Chicago Deep Dish pizza. Went here last time I was in Chicago and this time I got this one with giardiniera (hot peppers) on it and it was even better!

Gibson's Steakhouse - I thought this was really good, but no better than a Morton's or Daniel's. The shiny comes from the dessert. Which was this huge slice (literally like half a 4-tier cake) of banana-coconut cake and another huge slice of carrot cake. Amazing. I also had frog legs here and thought they were just ok.

Garrett Popcorn - Got a couple of bags of Chicago mix (cheddar/carmel mix) for the wife, she was not disappointed.

Portillo's - This was my favorite stop of the trip. I got a 9" italian beef sandwich with giardiniera and mozarella and the entire thing dipped in au jus! Also got a Chicago dog here and both were amazing!

What time did you come in? If you beat the rush you don't need to worry about reservations, as many of the types of people who go somewhere trendy eat at a specific time.

Portillos is the shit. I get it every time I go home to visit my family.

Good choices.

Check out Backstage Bistro and Superdawg next time in town. If you enjoy stand up cpmedy I can also point you in the right directions in Chicago.

I do enjoy stand-up, hopefully I will have enough time to do that next time. I wanted to drive out to Superdawg per your suggestion, but when I found out that Portillo's had the beef sandwiches AND a Chicago dog, I thought it would be a worthy substitute.

Personally I've always preferred Portillos hotdogs to Superdawg, but that might just be bias since Portillos was the hotdogs I ate all through childhood.

Regular tomatoes have no place on a hot dog, nor does ketchup.

Pickled green tomatoes on the other hand are a thing of beauty.

There was no ketchup, but it did have regular tomatoes. It was mustard, relish, onion (i think), celery salt, tomato, pickle spears.

Same goes for regular tomatoes. Blech.

Yellow mustard, picklelilly, steamed spanish onions, celery salt, pickled green tomato, sport peppers, a dill spear, and a steamed 100% beef Vienna hot dog on a poppy seed bun, cuddled by freshly cut crinkled french fries is the Chicago dog.

All I know is: this conversation is making me hungry and I have neither a Portillo's or a Superdawg within a thousand miles of me. :(

So what kind of hot dogs are available in your local supermarket? I like these from mine:

They have a bit of a spicy taste to them. Mmmm, good.
