I have a Dragon Quest Slime controller that has gunk all over it and I want to get it off. I thought that the controller was supposed to have that soft feel coating on the plastic, but now either A) that coating is coming off and looks nasty or B) the controller has nasty stuff all over it and that's why I got it for so cheap. My question is: "What could I use to remove this stuff?

I'll try that. I wasn't sure about using soap and water, I didn't want to ruin it.
Liftoff followed by Alcohol followed by WD40 followed by Dampened Soapy Rag. Also a ton of elbow grease and lots of patience. No kidding, that gunk is worse then old Gamestop Stickers, I had to clean cushion grips off a flight controller. Real nasty stuff that sticky goop.

Looks like the coating is all scraped up by fingernails. Two cars of mine ago the area around the door pull was coated in the same sort of stuff. Was great at first, but as it wore from use it started to look nasty and peel like that. Even if you clean it, it will probably never look as good again.
I had tried cleaning mine with soapy water in the past and it only ruined the rubbery material, literally turning the controller into a sticky mess! I had to use rubbing alcohol to strip away the original coat from my controller, so it was no longer sticky. Elbow grease and patients resulted in a glossy finish.
* as you can see on the button layout, I still need to hit a few spots around the buttons and analogues
