non-smartphone phone recommendations?

Post by indecks »

I want to get my mom a new cellular phone. She currently has a Samsung... emote? Or whatever it's called. It's a simple little touch screen non-android phone. It doesn't require a data plan. But it does have a decent little touch screen, one of those where you have to push down, its not like the iphone/android screens. Anyway, it's failing on her from time to time so it's time for a new phone.

I want to get her something that has a decent camera, and that can accept pictures from her kids. All of us have iphones or android phones with good cameras, so I dont want to give her a tiny little Kyocera flip phone with T9 texting, because she wont be able to get any pics.

Anyone have a phone like this, and on AT&T service?

The problem with this request is that the cell phone companies are almost completely taken over by smart phones, even the low end and free phones are android pretty much. They keep like one or 2 old non smartphones for this, but you wont find anything that fits your wants that wont need the data plan....new that is, if you are willing to look for a used phone like on ebay, you might be in luck. There is one phone that came to mind since you mentioned the camera thing, the samsung memoir came out right about the time android phones were taking over, but this one wasnt a full blown smart phone. It has an 8mp camera and touch screen.

There is just a quick search I did, you can find it cheaper than that, just make sure you get an unlocked version (not hard to find it looks like) Hope that helps!

Edit: another option would be the samsung behold, this phone is a little sleeker than the memoir, and has a 5 mp camera, it looks to be a little cheaper than the memoir, but IMO neither of them are in a terrible price range (you wont need a contract extension which is a plus) and that one that I linked with ebay is a brand new in box phone.

That one I linked was just one of the first I found, there were much cheaper ones. Check this one out:

That is the other phone I mentioned in my edit, brand new unlocked for under $100 isnt bad at all.

Cool, I'll check those links out when I get home. Apparently Ebay was JUST added to my work's firewall. I was able to look at the first one when you posted it, but now it's blocked.

Assholes.

I never did that when I was in IT.
