Ninja Turtles on Nickelodeon

Post by Key-Glyph »

Did anyone catch the first episode of the Nickelodeon TMNT reboot? I think it aired this past Saturday (but I might be very wrong on this).

If not, you can watch it here, like I did. And I must admit, I thoroughly enjoyed myself.

I'd been expecting the story to be drastically different from what I grew up with for two big reasons. For one, the recent Michael Bay kerfuffle had me paranoid. For two, a Ninja Turtles coloring book based on the show which I'd gotten as a silly gift (don't judge me! It came with temporary tattoos so I know you're just jealous ) made no mention of Shredder whatsoever. As such I was preparing for some potentially disappointing big changes -- but I've been pleasantly surprised.

The show may be for the kiddies, but it's in the spirit for sure. It's also been infused with a much stronger Japanese feel with stuff like anime tropes (e.g. cross-popping veins), stylized music, and even a couple of Japanese words sprinkled into the dialog. All together it adds a great touch that amounts to something greater than simply making sense within the story.

I'd also had my doubts about the CGI style when I saw a preview on YouTube, being that I hadn't particularly liked the look of the 2007 TMNT movie -- but I found these visuals to even be beautiful at times. They're deliberately evocative of Eastman and Laird's comic style, which is really, really cool.

Anyway, I'd love to hear other people's thoughts.

Oh, and was anyone else amused when
Rob Paulsen's voice came out of Donatello's mouth? He was Raphael in the original cartoon!

Yes, I was amused!

Sadly, I have to download the episodes, my DVR only recorded the first episode ... not the second half of the premier (twice)

What I saw, I liked. It looks light hearted like the cartoon, but also with a different slant.

So far I just finished the cold open and the theme song. It's definitely got the same spirit as the original. But man... the animation. I could get used to the CGI and the proportions, but the anime effects really clash with the CGI, and all the missing frames of animation are driving me crazy.

I happened to catch the beginning randomly. It didn't really hold my interest.
Still, I'm glad kids today have access to Turtles. It's a property that seems like it's never going to die!

haven't caught it yet, but I am actually excited to do so. I saw a whole endcap of the new action figures at Target last weekend, and they actually look pretty cool.

A lot of the stuff I watched as a kid has been rebooted and retooled for kids today. There's much less of a generation gap in cartoons it seems. You can mentioned Transformers, Thundercats, and Ninja Turtles to a modern kid and not get funny looks from them.

But IMO TMNT as an overall property is the more substantive than those. (It's the only one with origins in independent comics rather than toy sales.)

My 4 1/2 year old has been jumping all over the place telling me that he is in training to be a Detroit Ninja Turtle.

Twenty years ago we'd be seeing Konami pump out an awesome beat 'em up based on this. Ah, the good old days.
