This all started because my daughter received a Kindle Fire HD for her birthday from grandma. I have managed to get some SNES games running while using a wiimote as a controller. Pretty nifty stuff.
For myself I'm torn between the kindle HD and the 16gb Nexus 7. I have seen videos of the original Fire running PS1 games at what appears to be full speed so I'm sure that the HD would have plenty of power but I like the idea of the full Google play store(sideloading is kinda a PITA) and extra power of the Nexus (Just to make sure it stays up to date as long as possible if anything). On top of that I see tons of various generic tablets, but I worry about build quality.
I don't plan on using this strictly as a gaming device or anything, and more for general web browsing, videos etc as my wife constantly needs the only laptop in the house for school work and whatnot.
Any suggestions on lesser known tablets? Anything else I should know before I drop the cash?
Thanks in advance!

I feel obliged to mention that Windows 8 goes GA at the end of this month, so you'll have those tablets available as well.

I should have mentioned that I don't want to spend more than $250 and would really like to keep it in the $200 range. Looking for the best bang for my buck type thing. I also really like the Android platform and prefer the 7" size. I have used iPads and find the size a little awkward.

Almost all the 7" Tablets are sub-$300. Most of the ones from Acer, Asus, and Samsung are pretty nice.
You will run into an issue if you want to decode video though. nVidia Tegra (base for most Android tablets) can't do it.
The Acer ones are even sub-$200, and they're decent enough.

I use a modified ROM for my KF that allows the Google app store. I read that the KFHD's have been rooted already, can't go wrong with those if you're willing to have one rooted for extra Google functionality.
Btw, Google has effectively monopolised the word Android. Just try finding an image of an android online using that simple keyword

So is the tegra3 quad core not all its cracked up to be or do apps just not support it yet?
I need to get my daughters Fire HD from her and test out a few more things, but taking a tablet from a pre teen girl is no easy feat.

No, it's fine, it's specifically hardware video decoding that it doesn't support. Which is lame. Things like NetFlix work fine, but things like HD video over DLNA do not.

I currently use the ASUS Transformer Prime and it's an amazing tablet. I don't use it much as a gaming device more for general web browsing, videos, or using some apps.

Don't think twice and buy the Nexus 7, it's the best android tablet out there, and will stay updated for a long time. I'm a member of xda-developers (very active one at that) and everyone else there will agree with me. Go for the Nexus 7, it's amazing and cheap as dirt

My main issue with the nexus 7 is no SD card slot. I know you can use an OTG cable and transfer data that way - which is ok, but no SD card slot is problematic for me.Mephikun wrote:Don't think twice and buy the Nexus 7, it's the best android tablet out there, and will stay updated for a long time.
