Yeah Popo mentioned that before. Not sure if I remember it though, or even with mouse support it still felt clunky... hmm, not sure. Maybe the mood wasn't right, since I was able to get through Ultima Underworld and really enjoyed that one actually.

It seems like SS1 definitely ties into SS2 a bit though, so yeah I need to properly play it myself someday as well.

Been playing Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne, my first exposure to the franchise. I started on hard mode, god damn this is brutal. Pretty much every boss battle comes down to tooth and nail and any given encounter can kill you. I really hate how it's game over if the main character dies. I've been enjoying it a lot though, the challenge is quite refreshing even though it's a bit overwhelming.

Another thing I'm not keen on is how all the boss battles are coming down to "have a demon that will void out whatever element the boss uses". I want to establish a solid party but I have to constantly get demons that are resistant to certain attack types if I don't already have one to progress. I would prefer to be able to carry as many demons as I want rather than being able to swap in the middle of battle. Or at very least be able to "store" them somewhere so I don't have to constantly fuse them.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to slog through the entire thing (at least on hard mode), I'm wondering if Digital Devil Saga will be more down my alley. I don't care much for the pokemon style party system of capturing party members, I prefer to have a cast of characters.

The Pokemon thing is kind of a turn off. Anyone here know if Digital Devil Saga is like that?

I'm replaying Xenosaga myself, about 12 hours in and really digging it ... *chirp* (I'm used to nobody caring about this trilogy). I forgot how awkward the game is at times though, like no BGM during most of the cutscenes, I swear II and III weren't like that at all. Of the 12 hours I've gotten through, maybe 4 has been game time, haha. But oh well, I still love it. III is my favorite by far though and up there with Xenogears for me.

DDS does not involve monster catching. You have a small party of protagonists like a regular RPG and you gain skills by downloading abilities using the points you get from battle (think X's sphere grid, but you still gain regular levels to determine your statistics).

Sounds amazing, I really dug the sphere grid. Think I'm going to hit up Shadow Hearts next though. After watching some videos of the first two games... they look incredible, and I actually had no idea Mitsuda did some of the music. It sounds way better than his music for Xenosaga, which I'd say is probably his weakest material.

The first Shadow Hearts looks so appealing to me though since it's got static camera angles, and just everything about it looked like a PSX JRPG on the PS2... which is not an issue for me, haha. It looks really cool. I guess it came out like a week before FFX, so go figure it bombed or something...

Hello all,

First post here. I'm a big fan of shoot-them-up games and joined here to enlarge my video games discussion.

Anyway, after having beaten Dark Souls new game+++ and beginning to get bored by multiplayer, I just started Demon's Souls again.
Those games are good, I dont feel like I need to play other RPGs at the moment and hope From Software will keep them coming, and wont reduce the difficulty.

Xenosaga I due to my injury. It's great so far, but I find myself wishing it was a several season anime instead. I know there's that one adaption, but it's not a replacement for the game. With the story focus it could have been.

Stick it out with Xenosaga if you can, I'm 20 hours into the first replaying it myself... it's pretty awkward around the edges. The lack of BGM is a huge issue too. And yeah, the whole thing would've been better as an anime. I hear the anime itself is pretty terrible and doesn't cover much though, and turns KOS-MOS into some mass produced thing.

Xenosaga I is like 80% cutscenes and 20% gameplay.
Xenosaga II is shorter, the pacing is better, but with a tedious battle system.
Xenosaga III is perfection, perfect balance, best battle system (albeit simple, but faster and efficient), and the mecha combat was the best too.... it has a separate system kind of like how Xenogears handled it.

The series is bumpy, but Xenosaga III is easily one of my favorites and I think its peaks are quite possibly better than some of Xenogears. The final stretch is definitely a lot better, it gets insane.

The first game also lacks Jin, basically the Citan of the series. A huge void there.
