What was the last movie you've seen?

I can enjoy slow-burn movies for sure. It may just be the WHEN I watched it y'know? If your mind isn't ready for such slow movement?

I remember some folks saying Night of the Demons was too slow upon my recommendation and I was like "uh... one of the best movies EVER." haha.

I also adore such Lynch films as Mulholland Drive which isn't exactly action-oriented. Hell, I prefer Vol 2 of Kill Bill to Vol 1, so...

Not trying to knock your tastes or anything, but I didn't realize that anyone actually liked Mulholland Drive. It's always felt to me like a long-winded excuse to show two girls rolling around together. The first 30 minutes are pretty good--hell, the first scene is friggin' fantastic. But then the acting just hits a wall like a mack truck with the introduction of the main character; act two goes nowhere; and the end of the movie is dominated by a lesbian romance that I saw coming from the beginning, but was still really off-putting in its gratuity.

I guess I'm curious if you like it for the content, or just as a quirky, art house-y film with some killer ambience.

If there's one thing Lynch does right is weird, otherwise his stories make no sense whatsoever.

I watched it once last December and I was quite stoned when I watched it but I remember loving it. I loved how the story unraveled and how weird it was and that weird Billy Ray Cyrus part. But, I could be wrong, I need to watch it again, but I remember it being good.

When it comes to Ebert, it matters to me. He's not always right, nor does he have the final word but the man's opinion definitely matters. Speaking of, his review of MULHOLLAND DR. is one of my favorites. A few excerpts:

<after four paragraphs of character and plot explanation> Having told you all of that, I've basically explained nothing.

MULHOLLAND DR. isn't like MEMENTO, where if you watch it closely enough you can hope to explain the mystery. There is no explanation. There may not even be a mystery.

If you require logic, see something else.

Closure is not a goal.

The way you know the movie is over is that it ends.

oh dude I totally agree. theres always a few here and there I disagree with (his 1 star for raid redemption, his 2 stars on brazil, others I'm sure) but his reviews are the only ones I read really. I typically find myself loving all the same movies and directors he does. it's nice to have someone who's word is pretty much on point when it comes to movie reviews. I was just saying "not that it matters" because most folks tend to disregard most reviews and critics in general.

I wasn't trying to attack the movie, or anyone who likes it; and I don't think it's a bad movie, per se. I had always thought that it was popular for being really, incomprehensibly weird, rather than being an actually substantive film, though. It's fine if anyone likes it for that reason; It's just not that high up on my list of favorite films.

I guess in order to dissuade opinions that I'm going on a tirade about Mulholland Drive, I'll mention the movie I last saw.
Pretty sure it was Die Hard With a Vengeance. (They don't put enough riddles in movies these days. ) I did actually like the movie, though. It was pretty good for letting my eye-holes absorb flashy action and kabooms.

Anyone seen "Howl" with James Franco? It's been sitting on my Netflix instant queue for the longest time, but I just haven't been watching movies very much lately.

You also have to keep in mind that Ebert usually reviews screening, which aren't always the final cut. When I had a screening of the new TOTAL RECALL, most of the special effects weren't even close to done and focus groups were just giving their takes on it.

That, or he had a serious brain fart with RAID:THE REDEMPTION, which was my best theater experience this year (I think, I lose track).

Suggested reading: All of Ebert's books. From 4-star reviews to Your Movie Sucks. Agree or not with his opinion, you can't argue that each review is insightful, intelligent, and eye-opening.

You're not wrong at all, and you didn't come off as being a jerk. You like what you like, and David Lynch films, just like Kubrick or Anderson, aren't for everyone.

If you enjoy acid trips and a very simple plot hiding underneath some absolutely astonishing visuals then give this a shot. Also, the director is the son of George Cosmatos, the guy that brought us Cobra and Rambo II .

I actually think it's got a pretty obvious story if you watch it a few times and think about it. I could break down what I think the story is about pretty easily. And it doesn't seem to be a stretch to anyone I've mentioned it to. But on top of the story that is lurking under the surface is some amazing stuff. The man behind the restaurant, the acapella rendition of "Crying," Naomi Watts' audition, and so on.
