If game console makers all called it quits, I'd still have tons of games to play, including ones I haven't bought yet.

There are plenty of games like that. Arguably, F2P is the evolution of some of them, but there are demos out there for a fair number of games too. It's actually a fairly common model for PSN or XBLA titles.

I'm aware a lot of smaller games have demos of reasonable length (iOS actually seems to be the major player in the model with the "Lite" versions of games). I want more big games to have reasonably long demos though. Especially on PC.

But there's more available than ever with XBox Live Arcade demos.

I learned today that Yu Suzuki & AM2 developed Sword of Vermilion on the Genesis. An RPG. Mind. Blown.

My personal favorite way to demo a new PC game is to use Onlive. You just log in and you can instantly play most any game for 30 minutes. There's no downloading or installing, you just click the game you want and it boots instantly. Love it.

IMO, this the direction things will go for demos, and quite possibly the reason Sony bought Gaikai. In addition to saving download time (and, no doubt, hosting fees to serve up those files) it ensures people won't be hacking demo files to unlock the full version for free.

Why is it seemingly impossible to find one of these?

They did? I'm a Yu Suzuki fan and I'm on a quest to play every game he made, even if it's a RPG.

Sword of Vermilion actually looks pretty decent. I used to have it but didn't play much of it (due to my lack of interest in RPGs) so I can't say if it's actually good or not.
