Start with Hell's Angels if you haven't already; it's HST at his most abrasive.
Not sure how to make a Hell's Angel's movie though. A terrifying story with few stand out characters. And the violence...ouch. Maybe give Tarantino the rights and the lefts.

Tom waits huh? Interesting although I have never seen him act only listened to his music. Very acquired taste. Joaquin Phoenix I could see that for sure.

Do you have the criterion release of Fear & Loathing? Thompsons audio commentary is out there. I put it on for a bit before the random noises he made became too much.
