Need AV mods to my 2nd gen consoles

Post by Menegrothx »

I need an AV mod for my Odyssey 2 and Intellivision (and I'm about to buy a 7800 and a Colecovision soon) but I don't know how to mod consoles. Which is the cheapest way for me to get them modded? Print online instructions and ask some electronics shop to do it, or is there any modding store in Europe that mods all consoles (I mostly see private persons who do Intellivision or Atari 2600 AV mods, haven't seen a place that would mod multiple consoles the same time yet)?
Are the mods easy enough for me to do on my own with instructions? I don't want to risk harming my consoles, but I'll have to consider something like that if it's 200+ euros to mod all 4.

Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Intellivision - you can buy a premade board for composite on Intellivision, and would just need you to do basic soldering. http://www.intellivision.us/video_mod/video_mod.php

Where can I buy those? I've tried searching Intellivision AV, Intellivision mod etc on Ebay and Ebay.co.uk That site lists the mod in "Previous Products", so it doesn't seem like they sell them anymore.

Send a PM to "Oliver" on that page. I think he charged £39 as I recall for the unit pre-made.

They did provide a schematic for it, for free, to do it yourself, and so I put it onto my forum a while back : http://www.made-by-bacteria.com/viewtop ... =107&t=321

As you see in the link, I made a couple myself. One I made worked as well as his, another didn't.

One comment on this mod - when your Intellivision has been off for a while, and you start the system, you get about 1/2 the screen showing; reset and it then works fullscreen. I think it's something to do with charging the capacitors.

This mod works, basically reduces the level of the signal to a level that composite can take.

OK, thanks for the info. Since you've done this before, do you know anything about modding Odyssey 2/Colecovision/7800? Could you mod those consoles if you read instructions and schematics online?

Atari 7800 - there are guides on Atariage forum, however not easy mod to do by the looks of it. I got a French Colecovision and also 7800 as they do RGB natively, whereas other models don't.

This topic's old, but I want to add some info on how to mod the Odyssey 2 because there really isn't much for it online, and it's REALLY easy to do.

NOTES: This will produce a somewhat weak video signal, so it may appear dimmer on your TV than the RF would. It's still playable, but you can solve this by running it through a VCR, which should amplify the signal (maybe this depends on the VCR? Mine works at least).

Also, this is for the later-model Odyssey 2's with the permanent controllers. I don't know if it works for the early model.

Basically look at this link. I've also uploaded the only picture that matters here.
http://www.lukesandel.com/techgallery3/ ... -Composite

I did the mod the cheap way, by just hacking off the end of an RCA cable and soldering it directly to the board. The spot on the left is audio, and the spot on the right is video. Each of those spots has two solder points close together. I don't know what the guy in the photo is doing, but you can solder the wire to either of those adjacent spots because they are connected. Then solder the grounds of each cable (the outer wire) anywhere to the metal plate.

There's enough room in the case to just wind up the old RF cable and keep it inside the unit. Then I just ran the AV cable out through the old RF hole. If you really want to do this "right", you could drill two holes, buy two RCA jacks, and wire those to the board. I didn't really care because the controllers are already permanently hanging off the console, so what's another wire?

Everyone who has an odyssey 2 should at least do this mod. It's extremely easy to do since you only have to solder, at minimum, 4 spots that are really large and easy to work on. It looks way better than the RF did.

You could use a transistor to boost the video signal.

Nice find though!
