Being recently laid off I had a lot of free time this week, so I went through Darksiders 2...twice. This is easily one of my favorite games this year (if not my favorite). Great blend of action, exploration and RPG-style progression.

Excellent puzzles, great level design and tons of side quests. I would stumble upon dungeons that had nothing to do with the main story and end up exploring them for the next 45 minutes. Just as much care was put into side dungeons as the dungeons from the main quest.

There was also a lot of flexibility when it came to customizing Death and his skills thanks to a wide variety in stats and loot.

NihonRobot - I've also recently been in between jobs. I know how you feel. Lots of time to finish games though.
1. Skyrim (360)
2. SSX (360)
3. Deus Ex: Human Revolution (360)
4. Assassin's Creed (360)
5. Assassin's Creed 2 (360)
6. Gears of War (360)
7. Halo Reach (360)
8. Mass Effect 2: Lair of the Shadow Broker (360)
9. Mass Effect 3 (360)
10. de Blob (Wii)
11. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS)
12. Mighty Switch Force! (3DSDL)
13. Super Mario Bros. (NES)
14. Yoshi's Island (SNES)
15. Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 (GBA)
16. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)
17. Kirby's Dream Land 3 (SNES)
18. Professor Layton and the Curious Village (NDS)
19. Braid (PC)
20. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (GB)
21. Beneath a Steel Sky (PC)
22. Star Fox (3DS)

Kirby's Dream Land 3 was a bunch of fun. Not quite as brilliant as Kirby Super Star, but good fun all the same. Getting all of the Heart Stars would take quite a bit of time, maybe I'll go back and try later. I'm done with the game for now.

Professor Layton and the Curious Village - Loving this series, excited to play another one. Really addicting. I probably spent too many hint coins, I'm not always so good at logic puzzles but I love doing them!

Braid - I avoided this game for a long time for some reason. Glad I finally played it. Really cool puzzles and nice atmosphere. I personally thought the story felt a little like it was trying too hard, but maybe that's just me.

Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 - Really fun Mario game. I for some reason haven't played the Wario series because I was worried it couldn't stand on it's own and I would just be comparing it to Mario games. Fortunately it has enough unique mechanics and design to feel like it's own game. I liked all the power ups and trying to get the maximum amount of coins is fun (hmmm, wonder where New Super Mario Bros. 2 got that idea...). I will definitely be playing the Wario Land sequels.

Beneath a Steel Sky - I've been making a concerted effort to get into Adventure games. I've always been interested in them but don't take the time to really get in the right mindset. I finally played through Beneath a Steel Sky and I'm glad I did. A really fun universe and story, though I was a little disappointed at how much it didn't take itself seriously. Most of the puzzles made sense but I won't lie, I got lost more than once. I'm guessing the more time I spend with P&C Adventure games the easier it will be for me to decipher the obtuse puzzles in them.

Star Fox 3DS - Rented this one from GameFly just to check it out. It plays pretty much exactly like the N64 game with slightly prettier graphics. I wasn't impressed enough to want to buy the game, if I want to play again I'll just play the N64 game. The multiplayer modes were pretty fun though, but I don't play multiplayer games enough to warrant a purchase.

1/2 Cannon Spike (DC)
1/9 Mega Man X4 (GCN)
1/17 Psycho Soldier (PSN)
1/22 Warhammer 40,000: Dark Crusade (PC)
1/28 Police 911 2 (Arcade)
2/7 Soul Calibur V (PS3)
2/26 Metal Gear Solid 2: HD Edition (PS3)
3/7 Street Fighter X Tekken (PS3)
4/14 Sonic CD (PSN)
5/3 Dragon Ball Z: Tenkaichi 3 (Wii)
6/3 Metroid Prime (Wii)
7/1 Metroid: Other M (Wii)
7/1 Kirby's Return to Dreamland (Wii)
7/7 Strikers: 1945 (Arcade)
7/25 Super Mario 3D Land
8/23 Megaman III (Gameboy)
8/24 Megaman IV (Gameboy)

Anyone who likes Megaman but hasn't experienced the Gameboy games is really missing out. III and IV are two of my favorite Megaman games hands down, console titles included. The best parts of the console games Megaman 3 and Megaman 4 are reproduced and added on to with a lot of features and elements that the series never received on consoles until the late 90's. You quickly forget that the game is on a gameboy screen.

This, of course, brings me to Megaman V. Or, as Noise has always had to call it, Rockman V.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

I'm going to. Try my hardest at beating LOZALTTP. How long should it take me if I have no idea what I am doing and suck at the game?

^ ^ ^ for great truth.

I have I and II for the GB and it's all so true. You'd think it couldn't be done justice on a portable system, but it has. I don't have the later games, but the first 2 really were impressive too. The graphics, control, and action (and difficulty!) are spot on to the NES games.

I'm working on MM8 on the Anniversary collection, and it's also a great fit to the series.

Dust: An Elysian Tail - 29 out of 30 achievements (I need to beat one of the higher difficulties for that last one)

So I beat the game, found and collected everything, did all the side quests, fully explored every map, four starred all of the challenge rooms, got every achievement but one, and maxed out my levels. I did it all without a guide, a faq, or any outside help too.

This is now my favorite Xbox Live Arcade title, and one of my favorite 2D games of all time. The game is absolute perfection. This is one of the most polished games I have ever played. It is refined in every way possible. It delivers on EVERY level from graphics, music, gameplay, and replay value. It's got great beat 'em up gameplay, great platforming, lots of exploration, and tons of cool little surprises I won't spoil. It's an excellently put together metroidvania game with more than enough content to justify the 15 dollar price tag. In fact, I clocked in a little over 20 hours to beat it AND do every optional thing in the game. That's about half the playtime you'd expect from 50-60 dollar rpg. Plus, it's got 30 achievements! That's 400 points! Quite a lot for an XBLA game

The story is excellent. On the surface, it looks and sounds like a kid's cartoon, but it actually hits on some serious adult themes and the game is full of great jokes - many of which are aimed squarely at gamers. The game is also full of references and tributes to other great games, and the graphics are Vanillaware quality. This is easily one of the most gorgeous looking Xbox Live Arcade games ever made. The combat is some of the best I have ever seen in a metroidvania style game. It's flashy, fast paced, over the top, and awesome. Plus, it emphasizes finesse, something I wish more games did these days. It's all about racking up huge combos, but if you take a hit you lose your combo, which means less experience points.

All of this was put together by one guy, except for the music. Everything else was put together by Dean Dodrill. All I can say is that this guy is absolutely amazing. Dust: An Elysian Tail is a MUST PLAY game if you like 2D side scrollers, metroidvania games, or the beautiful art style of Vanillaware games.

This is a side scrolling horror action game where you have to hunt down various monsters that have sprung up recently from online mythologies such as the Slenderman, Smile Dog, Skin Taker, The Rake, and The Weeping Angels (visit creepy pasta if you have never heard of these characters before).

The game manages to actually be fairly scary, which is largely due to the haunting soundtrack provided by Midnight Syndicate. The gameplay is also somewhat scary for a sidescrolling action game, simply because you constantly have to be wary and be prepared for the next thing to jump out out you. The gameplay punishes the gunsure and confident player and makes it impossible to progress in the game without learning to take measured steps and time your shots.

I played through most of the game without realizing that there is another side to the game that allows you to see into a ghost dimension. I actually liked the game better before I realized the ghost dimension was there because the game was both harder and scarier. Flipping dimensions can lead you to find clues and powerups that make the game generally easier. If you never flip to the ghost dimensions, you will never gain health power ups, gameplay power ups, or extra lives. It's possible to complete the game without visiting the ghost dimension, but once you know it's there, it's hard to not jump back and forth looking for extra lives since the game otherwise only gives you 3 lives and no continues. It's jarring to jump between dimensions because it shifts the music, which kills some of the game's otherwise great atmosphere. The only thing that the ghost dimension adds to the game's horror is that there are notes and recordings from the dead that can be found on the other side, and those provide a haunting context to the game's proceedings.

Corril Slayer is made by Eric Ruth, the indie developer that is famous for the Halo demake, the Left 4 Dead demake, and the Team Fortress demake. This game is his own original thing, though as mentioned previously, the boss characters are all based on internet mythology. He's done a nice job of making a scary retro game that uses modern horror creatures. I had a lot of fun with the game, despite my dislike of the world-jumping mechanic (which can be completely ignored if desired).
