Thinking about building a compact desktop for more demanding games. I will be playing Guild Wars 2 starting tonight and the ability to use high detail settings would be nice.

Re: Any one else that loves computers
I love computers and computer games but mainly play indie/doujin games. So I don't require anything too fancy. Haven't had a desktop in years. I love slim/speak designs and currently have a Zenbook Prime Ux31a. 13" 1080p IPS screen.

I only "assemble" PCs for others now, since I made the switch to laptops.. Windows 8 seems to be the milestone that prompts me to stop doing this at all. There's literally no reason why Linux couldn't become a viable gaming platform, so I do hope Steam Linux takes off and changes people's perceptions.

And having millions of people switch OSes.
Also, Linux would need to be better optimized for laptop battery life. I've always found a reduction in battery life going from Windows to Linux on any of my laptops.

If given enough reason there might be an industrial shift away from DirectX altogether, but it's a pipe dream at this point. Let's see if Newell can instigate something with his Linux version of Steam.

Even if gaming does switch to Linux it'll be a very very slow process, IMO. I'd imagine it'd take a decade or so to transform Linux into the main PC gaming platform.. But I'm just things up right now..Pulsar_t wrote:If given enough reason there might be an industrial shift away from DirectX altogether, but it's a pipe dream at this point. Yes you need a sound and input library as well which may exist and just be less well known, but don't forget there was a retail Linux version of Quake III back in the day, as well as other games.

I was waiting for someone to bring up Open GL. There was a time when Open GL was a real competitor to Direct3D, but those days are long gone. Say what you will about Microsoft, but they've really invested heavily in getting everyone on board with DirectX.Hobie-wan wrote:Open GL.MrPopo wrote:DirectX.Pulsar_t wrote:There's literally no reason why Linux couldn't become a viable gaming platform,
