They'd better support 1920 x 1200 for a change... :x

By the time the PS4 comes out the 4K TVs will probably not be $20K, I guess we'll see!

I don't see why it wouldn't support Ultra High Definition.

PS4 won't be out any time soon, and it will have to be future proof for at least 6 or 7 years.

It's highly likely it will support UHD...

4K in a consumer TV set is pretty overkill. You'd need like a 60"+ screen minimum to even notice any benefit over 1080p.

So what PC video cards do 4k now? If 4k has been done on the PC for at least a year or so, I'd say it's not that much of a long shot for the PS4 as Sony probably won't make it cheaper than $400.
It is more of a joke since the market will not have the screens for it. To get the benefits from it you will have to have a very large tv, a very calibrated monitor, or a very good projector. Also, broadcast tv wont be in 4k for atleast another five years (at the earliest). Sure you can pump a 4k signal into a 1080p tv, but a 1080p image will look good enough for everyone but the picky. To answer your question, there are several GPUs that can run 4k, a 3 gig 580 GTX can do it fine. To do 4k right you will be spending atleast 3k on your computer right now. The guys at Brightside of News did a build for this exact reason recently:

So 3k for a gaming pc is bad but its not ludicrous. Thats until you factor in that they are using a EIZO FDH3601 as their monitor. Its only 36k and not out until later this year. Now Im not an EIZO fan, I prefer Flanders Scientific, but their 23inch 4k monitor is still in the 5 digit realm. Even Viewsonic's 4k offering is over 10k.

I really do not see this happening.

Edit:
Then again, this is Sony. They will probably sell it at 800ish out of the gate and add it in. What worries me is that going into this realm, is power consumption.

I'm sorry but the entire notion of a 4K format already just kinda pisses me off. A lot of TV hasn't even moved over to HD yet.

A lot of current 1080p HD film transfers are made from 4K masters, many of them at even lower resolutions than that. They'd have to do new transfers all over again to take advantage of 4K.

I mean, if this is something that'll probably remain exclusive to the enthusiast market or something, that's one thing, but I think the idea of pushing 4K as a new standard for average consumers is absolutely insane.

The human eye can't even friggin' see the level of detail that you'd see in 4k unless the average TV size for the home was hitting 90" or something. You'd need a good 60" TV minimum to notice any difference at all.

It's insane because frankly, I have no idea how they'd actually convince average people it was a worthwhile upgrade. 480i to 1080p? You can see the difference pretty easily. 1080p to 4K? ...yeah not really.

You ever know you're right about something, and you back down because, "Hey, I'm talking to professionals, they know what they're talking about." Then you find out you were right, and folks want to drag their damn feet correcting their error?

If I could Force choke people, a lot of folks would be turning blue right now.

I have a projector. A lot of people already have a 42 inch TV. Which in Europe wasn't that self-evident untill a few years ago, since rear projection TVs never took off here like they did in the States. Heck, my neighbor already has a 50 inch 3D TV. So I still see larger 4K TVs as an option. Even though admittedly, the difference between what we have now and 4K isn't that revolutionary. Then again, same thing has been said about consoles before too I'm sure...

On top of that, maybe there's things we don't take into account. Like how the eye / brain works. Maybe we can see details without really seeing them. If that even makes sense... lol
