What Would You Be Doing...
Re: What Would You Be Doing...
I'd be doing what I'm doing now. I'd just be making a living wage doing it.
Re: What Would You Be Doing...
I'm currently trying to get into a Master's program in my university, on communications (I have a B.A. in communications/journalism). Last year, I tried getting into a Master's in design, but I failed - I even asked dsheinem for some book recommendations (thanks, ds!).
If I hadn't done journalism, I'd probably have done design itself or economics as an undergrad course.
I haven't had a fixed job for a year or so now, which has been rough. Before that I worked in the Brazilian census bureau doing employment surveys.
To make ends meet, I teach English and do some translation work. It's not ideal, but until I get a scholarship, it'll be my main source of income. I do intend to get back into design later, but I feel I'm bound to go into the academic career.
Otherwise, if everything fails, I might actually seriously consider translation, localization and so on as a career.

Right now I'm in Graphic Design. I enjoy it (until somebody pissed me off), but ideally, I'd like to be a writer. Which is odd, as I really have no skill for it. I can't spell very well, my grammar's not so hot, and I get so easily distracted that I don't think I could just sit down and actually write for long periods of time. The stories and ideas are there, but I fear that they will never make it on to a written or typed page.

Well, I do software development for a living and do enjoy it. However, I could see myself entering the trades (plumbing, hvac, finish carpentry). The other career might be management consulting (e.g, Kinsey).

Don't sell yourself short. Your posts always seem well thought out and succinct. You would also be hard pressed to find a member here who doesn't enjoy your movie reviews.
Michi, you definitely have skills, hone them and I can easily see you as a writer.

I'd be an architect. Ever since drafting 101 (or whatever the high school freshman class was called), I've constantly been into architecture, looking at buildings, bridges, angles, houses, etc. I usually design a few dozen houses and floor plans a month just for fun.
(FC, AVFC, NES, SFC x2, SNES, N64, GC x2, Wii x2)*(G&W x7, GB, GBpocket, GBASP, DS-L x2)
(GEN, SS x3, DC x3)*(PCE-Duo)*(Xbox:500GB)*(NGCDZ, NGPC)*(PS1, PStwo, PS3:160GB, PSP.3K)

That would be cool. What program do you use for your drawings?D.D.D. wrote:I'd be an architect. I would love to be able to come up with a drawing of my future 3-season porch remodeling (tear down and rebuild) project. I tried to start with Google Sketchup but the learning curve seems steep. Any recommendation on a good program to use?

I'm really old school; I use paper. Just simply because when I'm out and about I can draw when I see something that inspires me. For floor plans, still paper just because I like the hands on feel and I'm very used to it - CAD was $1,000s back 15+ years ago too was a major "learning issue". That and like you said, the CAD programs are a bit complex.gtmtnbiker wrote:That would be cool. What program do you use for your drawings?D.D.D. wrote:I'd be an architect.
