What Would You Be Doing...

Post by Luke »

...If You Weren't Doing What You Are Doing? (subject line wouldn't fit).

Try and take this seriously. Answers like "your Mom" won't make you seem bright. This is simply an attempt to get to know the members better and learn their other serious interests. Ramble all you want. Change your mind if you want to. Be respectful.

I'm currently in e-commerce, love it. If I wasn't doing this, I'd love to be a hard hitting Sports Journalist (no Jay Mariotti jokes please). I have a friend who has been a Sports Journalist for over a decade and although the pay isn't that great and the job is very stressful and demanding, I believe I would absolutely love it. My buddy Nate who writes for our local paper says it "drains your love for the sport, the people who play it, the people who profit from it", but that is all horse shit. At his heart he still loves sports and getting paid to write about them, and no one is more excited to watch a game then him as long as he doesn't have to prepare a write up.

Very few people tell the truth about professional and college sports in fear of persecution. But there are still stand outs who aren't afraid to say "Vick should never have been allowed back in the NFL", "Enough about Tiger, can we talk about who is actually winning?", and other subjects that get swept under the rug solely to make a profit.

Childhood me would say Roller Coaster Designer. After a trip to EPCOT Center and playing on a "build and ride your roller coaster simulator" I always wanted to see and ride one of my own designs, doesn't every kid? But I don't see any job security in only designing roller coasters, as I doubt the demand supplies steady contracts.

...and Restaurant head chef/owner. This isn't the area for haute cuisine. Plus 95% restaurant failure rates scare the bejesus out of me. Pass.

I am an Assistant Sales Manager for a Fiberoptic Communications company, but went to school for Food Science and Hospitality Management. Had Calculus not been needed, I would be in either Sports Videojournalism or Film production. In highschool I did alot of Videojournalism, and had a free ride lined up to a small college if I would continue. BUT they required Calculus (without a calculator) to be in their video majors. Being that I didnt want to do that that badly, I went to Auburn, who also require Calculus for video majors (at the time). So I fell back on charisma and went into Hospitality Management. After my first year, they added the Food Science portion.

The rest of my family is in film/video production so I still do it on the side, but it is not my primary source of income, nor will it ever be.

Ur dad!

On a serious note, the only thing I'd rather be doing is living fat off of investment properties or something similar. I hate working but I'm fortunate enough to have a job that I'm good at that can support my lifestyle. But you better believe that if I could I'd retire today and play video games the rest of my life.

I'm sometimes the same, sometimes the opposite. I love just goofing around, but at the same time l like to have some "purpose", even if the purpose is contributing to the bottom line.

But I can agree with Office Space; if I had unlimited money, I'd probably do nothing (after I went on a space vacation).

Yeah, I don't have that same desire for purpose. I just like to enjoy life.

I'm a security manager at a hospital. It took a long time going to school and climbing ranks to get to the top spot in the department. As much stress as there is; having a Mon-Fri 8-430 gig is pretty great, especially with the kids in school.

But...end of the day, I still have bosses. I would have no desire to "do nothing". That would get boring REAL fast, maybe 3-4 months before you develop a habit of sleeping 11 hours a day and basically look forward to climbing in bed to watch netflix.

I look at people who retire early and think it's great...and then 6 months later are going nuts, getting depressed, or both. My dad retired recently - 8 months ago. There are only so many rooms that need new drywall and so many decks that need to be expanded before you say, "Man, I need a job (or at least a full on detailed hobby that has some sort of discipline / schedule to it).

So, i'd be doing something where I was my own boss. Not necessarily doing amazing financially, but doing something I enjoy where I am able to mostly set my hours / schedule / and be in charge. Likely a small business selling wooden toys I made, or something similar. So, to answer, a small business - hobby / collectible / toy shop owner.

If I wasn't doing what I'm doing now....hmmm
Does it have to be a job? People started saying jobs and I don't see anything about it being job specific.
