Yeah, I dont believe that LC is a bad game, I'm just skeptical at this point that it's the kind of game that I'm looking for. I'll definately try it out though

I didn't have the patience to sit through the 30 minute cutscenes when I tried MGS2 despite the fact that I loved the first one, but I've got to say that some of the codec conversations I've seen on youtube definately fit the bill. It's that dreamlike surreal athmosphere, cryptic dialogue and things like that what I am looking for, not just games that are visually weird.
You know what I am talking about then...(Also, I agree that the cut scenes are a bit much, but there really is a good game under there. You should give it another shot sometime...)

For dreamlike qualities, I would try both Ico and Shadow of the Collossus. (I do not recall whether there is an option to disable the sub-titles on the jibberish language, but if so, I suspect that disabling them would add greatly to the ephemeral, dreamlike nature of those games.)

You might also want to try No More Heroes and No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle. My experience with each of those games is limited, but the portions that I have played are odd (and enjoyable)...like Killer7.

Finally, does Catherine (360/PS3) fit here? I have not played that game, but it sounds like the sort of game that you are seeking.

EDIT: Re-reading your original post, I would lump the Jumping Flash! games into the "trippy/surreal and crazy/Japanese(:P) games" category.

I know it's been mentioned, but LSD: the dream emulator, is nuts! I have been playing it for the first time these past couple days, and i can't believe how insanely vivid this game can be despite having a limiting graphical look.

another set of games that can't be missed is the ever wonderful katamari games. all those colors, the super happy music, and every corner is full of something random that just makes you laugh or question things.

I love these threads, especially when the focus is on more than just trippy visuals. A game that I always add to these conversations is the original MDK. If at all possible, play the PC version instead of the notably downgraded PS1 version. You can pick it up on GOG for just a few bucks and it is totally worth it.

The "story" text that comes before each level sets the tone, with a huge alien minecrawler descending on some random town and while you board the minecrawler at the beginning of each level, the levels themselves look nothing like the inside of a minecrawler, in fact they alternate between huge outdoor alien vistas and weird interior sections.

The levels are really memorable in their weirdness. One of my favorite sequences has you floating down a long tunnel and landing in a Mario 64-esque scene with bright blue skies and green trees. But you quickly notice the scene is flat and fake looking. Soon you realize that the scene is actually made up of 4 painted walls that surround you and as soon as you shoot them they fall down to reveal you are standing in a dark, enemy infested room...awesome!

Here's a great review by one of my favorite Youtuber's.

Definitely have a look if you aren't familiar with the game. If you like trippy games, MDK is absolutely one of the best!

Also, I do not think that anyone has mentioned Deadly Premonition (360/PS3). I have not played it, but I understand that it is like the video game version of "Twin Peaks". If it is anything like the television show - or any of David Lynch's other work - then it probably falls into this genre.

Good call. I've been meaning to play that game for a long time now! Alan Wake also has at times a very Twin Peaks-esque athmosphere, if you buy the game, make sure you get the DLC levels also.

I know Earthworm Jim has been mentioned, but I don't think that the ToeJam and Earl games have. Those were kind of in the same boat as earthworm jim being weird for the sake of being weird (and for laughs) but it seems like these games took it a level further (the sequel did at least).

Dang, I could swear there are more, I just can't think of very many others right now.

EDIT: the Sonic the Hedgehog Emerald gathering minigame could also be considered trippy. It is a different style of playing sonic and the visuals were pretty psychedelic.

The 3D tube levels in Knuckles Chaotix are really cool
