I don't want to derail the thread, but I thought I'd mention that I've been to Pearl Harbor, and I've been to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. What I noticed is that at the Pearl Harbor Museum, the main focus is Japan and the vehicles the Imperial Navy used in the attack. At the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bombing museums, there is very little, if any, focus on America. Those museums focus on those who died, what they left behind, and the reconstruction after the war.

All three events were horrible tragedies, but how you go about remembering them is totally up to the following generations.

Anyhoo, back to the Olympics. I was really rooting for David Rudisha, glad he got the gold! What a stand-up guy. He knew he was going to win the 800 meter but he wasn't arrogant at all about it. It was really nice to see his opponents celebrate with him.

Seriously, what the fuck is up with some young Americans being mad over Pearl Harbor?
Damn it. I wish people would stop using twitter accounts to showcase their idiocy. As a young American, I'm embarrassed to admit they're from my country.

What really irks me about this is that I'm sure most of them thought they were being soooooo funny.

There will always be idiots. A dozen or so "tweets" doesn't reflect the thoughts of an entire nation.

Luckily there have been plenty of athletes falling and flopping around to divert our attention.

Whilst I agree they don't represent the thoughts of a nation, to get into the most talked about topics in twitter takes more than a few dozen tweets.

It's kind of sad, but I'm not gonna judgethe USA based on these idiots. I can imagine how UK football fans would have acted if this were Germany too :|

It's sad to see how much racism still exists in the world.

As a kid I loved fencing. Maybe I just loved fencing in movies, hey, I was a kid.

Now it seems rather like a long game of "I'm not touching you, I'm not touching you..."

Did athletes always use this sword design? I'd like to hold one of these swords, as they look like they have no weight to them, the "blade" looks like it has no structural integrity, and that basically people are fighting with a long ball point bic pen that has been sitting out in the sun for a week. I also pray all the protective equipment the fencers use is for hit detection only.

I could be 100% wrong, but the swords don't look like they could much more damage than a poke in the eye.

Maybe I'm just Olympiced out.

Having used one (albeit briefly), I'll say that whilst they are quite light, they're not quite as flexible as you would expect from watching the fencing, and that for them to bend like that when they hit, they must be jabbing reasonably hard. The padding probably prevents a lot of bruising and suchlike from being jabbed quite forcefully - even if it's not sharp, the sword tip has a small surface area.

I wasn't aware there was another use for twitter.

Not to argue, but the swords are literally drooping when held still. They look like a cheap car radio antenna, right down to the ball at the tip. I would imagine if I had to fence, I'd prefer a sword that did not waver a bit, but again, I obviously know squat about fencing.

Stabbing, on the other hand...

You can post about sales on yarn and boost sales. I guess there's that and showcasing idiocy.
