Get one of the bulky VCR models that weigh a ton and it's guaranteed that no one will want to steal it from you! :) And you get to amuse people with some of the worst that retro gaming has to offer
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

Ha ha ha! Maybe if the CD-i had a decent multiplayer game, I would.

My advice is to not worry about bringing any consoles with you. I remember brining my Gamecube with me for my Freshman year of college... I ended up playing it for about 20 minutes over the entire first semester (and then brought it home).
Really, you're probably not going to have time for serious gaming and if your dorm was anything like mine, space is going to be very limited. I didn't even use a TV for most of my college experience.

I'd say bring a handheld though. I got a DS while I was in college and that got plenty of use.

This mostly ends up being the truth. The only time my consoles got much use up at college was during get-togethers with friends, not for much serious playtime. My recommendation is to get a modded Xbox, 4 controllers, a bigger hard drive, install XBMC on the thing, then put all your emulators, games, movies, and music onto that hard drive, then you'll have something that isn't just a game machine, but a media center as well, which I am sure you will get a lot more use out of.

Trust me, in college, you'll warm up to the idea awfully quick.

Well, hey, you're living in Houghton! That's only 2(ish) hours away from NMU!

I took my Genesis to college but if I had to do it over again I don't think I would. Nothing got broken or stolen but the risk was always there.

Had loads of fun with it anyway. My roommate had his Dreamcast and a modded PS2 as well so we never had a shortage of games to play.
