DIY 3d Scanning?

Has anyone built a 3d Scanner? I have seen several examples on youtube of doing it with a laser pointer or projector with a webcam or kinect. But does anyone have any experience with them? I want to use it to scan in some things I have made in real life into 3d models. Untextured is fine. I know I can just spend 3k on a device and software that will do it all for me, but I do not have that kind of money for this project.
