A disgruntled ex-teacher working for the government kidnaps a class of ninth graders and deposits them on an island to wage war against one another in a battle to the death. The students are fitted with explosive collars, while a variety of weapons are distributed across the battlefield...
I haven't read the book, but no, they were given random backpacks that could contain weapons or other tools as they left the orientation room in the movie.
...video game-style.
Fuck you sensationalist hack writer.

Buying stuff from a store is video game style because RPGs have stores, right? Geocaching is just like a video game because you find random loot hidden in a box after some person tells you of treasure hidden somewhere, right?

I don't see this working really unless it were a miniseries. But the whole problem of the violence in relation to students makes me think this won't work for TV either.

What? It would make a perfect TV series. Kids plotting against each other, making alliances, backstabbing each other and so on. Forcing every TV show, movie and game to have a sequel or multiple seasons is fcking stupid, it's exactly that kind of lazyness/greedy explotation that ruins great franchises
My WTB thread (Sega CD/Saturn games)
Also looking to buy: Ys III (TG-16 CD), Shadowrun (Genesis) Hori N64 mini pad and Slayer (3DO) in long box/just the long box

But we all know that TV executives can't be trusted to do this most of the time. If they make it and it tanks, there will be an unfinished mess unless they filmed the whole thing so at you could at least watch all of it on disc later. If it is a huge success, they'll keep milking the cow and dragging it on until the udders fall off.

Battle Royale without Japanese high school girls = FAIL.

The closest we'll get is Catholic school girls wearing skirts two sizes two small, with maybe one Japanese girl thrown in the bunch for variety.

If I was in charge of the project, it'd be a prequel to a film version, which would essentially be an extension of the original Japanese version.

Now, I've been pimping out this particular BR-USA concept, and it's similar to my idea for an American version of The Tribe, but here goes:
Shortly after Japan finds some success with their BR Act, other countries adopt a similar concept.

The first is America, where the 12-17 population counts for almost 60-90% of the population, and where of that number, all but a quarter of that has no criminal record.

So the American version of the BR Act serves as both population control and a pre-adult crime deterrant.

It's also the basis for a major Internet series, which is quite common after the fall of Hollywood, and the DIY Internet series concept of the early-2010s has evolved into a replacement for network television (this is also a concept I have for a potential series of novels). And "Battle Royale" has become essentially a hyperviolent primetime version of The Hunger Games (ironic that the cheap BR knockoff THG will exist in the BR universe), and also the hottest thing people watch.
So my idea isn't a remake/sequel/knockoff/etc, but rather makes up an extended universe, like what the various Star Wars fiction (comics, games, books, et al) did for the movies. It'd also leave room for other countries to do the same, and I say this, I betcha we'd all agree that BBC would totally hop on this bandwagon. But wouldn't a Japanese entry into this fray create a paradox and destroy the universe? LOLLMFAOROFLWTF420247666!!
