It was pretty obvious that the whole purpose was to torture Batman. First Bane explicitly says so, since Batman isn't afraid to die, so he must be punished first. And then when it turns out Talia was pulling the strings, now the torture becomes personal.
This. And I never read 'henchmen' out of that whole setup. Seemed to me like Bane respected Ra's, and probably had just as much a hand in actually planning the whole thing out as Talia did.

And yeah, the love is a platonic/fatherly thing. Not romantic, not pedophilia. I mean jeez his entire backstory is saving her from a bunch of would-be rapists.

Also, some of you people must have really shitty sound at your theaters. Bane wasn't hard to understand at all where I went. Gordon was harder to hear than he was.

Also, I'm sure people might disagree, but I think as a conclusion, as a threequel, etc, TDKR is a better ending for its series than Return of the Jedi was for Star Wars.

TDKR didn't have ewoks, for one.

Some of the TDKR complaints so far about Bane in this thread...
..have been about the motive for his actions in instilling social/class warfare when he just intended to blow up the city anyway. Did you all not catch that he wanted to instill false hope first? He makes this very clear to Bruce/Batman...

The fact that Bane even shares that long monologue with Bruce leads me to believe that the whole false social revolution thing was probably all his idea to begin with.

It absolutely was. The "trials," the possibility for redemption, the safety in compliance, the poor taking from the rich - all of that was a collective "false hope" meant to make the detonation even more damning and cleansing. I am not sure how anyone could miss that and/or dismiss the plot of the last half of the film as a "stupid attempt at ruling Gotham foiled by Batman" or something.

That all still doesn't explain why anybody bothered to follow Bane. Now, it would have made sense if he didn't straight up tell everyone that the city was going to be annihilated, but he did. Nobody would follow someone that they know is going to kill them. Nobody would fight for a paradigm shift that's just going to result in nothing.

Early in the film John Blake finds a body of someone who's brother's with an orphan at the orphanage he used to live at. He talks to the younger brother, who tells him that "There's work down there". He's simply paying a lot of his crew. The rest I assume are simply extremely idealistic and believe in the League of Shadows idea that destroying a place like Gotham is a greater good for the world. Others are buying into his fake social revolution.

He never told everyone he was going to blow up the city no matter what. He said if anyone tries to escape or if they get any outside help, he'll blow it up. The bomb decay, etc was something only he, Talia, Bruce, and the handful of people they told knew about. Nobody outside of that knew that the bomb was going to explode anyway.

Boo on the Ewok hate. They gave us the Nub Yub song, which was great.
