From a facial hair standpoint, it's mostly a pressure to demonstrate that you take care of your appearance. So either shaving every day or having a nicely trimmed and good looking beard style (whether it's full, goatee, moustache, or something else).

That is mostly true. Which makes it a close analogy to some of the comments people made about make-up. It takes some time to shave everyday or to trim etc. I personally think people can look pretty decent without shaving every day, doesn't mean that they will only shave once a month. I think some women may agree it can look nice, so I really get the feeling it is mostly just societal convention for appearing in the work place and particularly in some occupations.

There's this old chick at my work, I can usually smell her at least 20 feet away. It's insanely awful.

Ever had to go several flights up an elevator with someone who excessively uses perfume/cologne? That's a beginning of developing a phobia.

I walked past a 40-ish guy in a plain old comfortable t-shirt and shorts in Target last night who must have taken a bath in cologne before heading out.

I am not sure if this a culture clash or what ,
but in this part of the world, more perfume usually means a better smell. the more the better. Its not unusual for people to apply more than 1 kind of perfume before leaving their homes.

I must say its pretty surprising to me that you guys do not like it. This is like hearing " please stop eating steak, that type of meat is awful"

But are they lightly applying and do they go together ok, or does it seem like they took a shower in it before heading out?

Nah, unless you're objecting to eating meat based on your religious or animal love reasons, you probably wouldn't pester someone unless it smelled extremely strong and disagreed with you. Just seeing them eat it probably wouldn't bother you. The perfume thing would be more analogous to a smoker being obnoxious with their smoke in regards to non-smokers and non-smoking areas.

Just went through all my wedding pictures to print a few and opened the honeymoon file.

A picture of a woman in front of a huge framed mirror spraying perfume on her while in lingerie is about as "classy sexy" as you can get. Hollywood needs to bring that back.

Remind me not to visit your part of the world. And it's not the same as "eating steak". Eating steak does not create a toxic smell that engulfs everyone in its blast radius.
