Heard it at a Valero near my place and at a Subway just across the street from it. Also heard the coin sound effect from Super Mario Bros somewhere else.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog in cash registers
I've heard the ring chime at a couple gas station convenience stores in my area. I mentioned it and they just looked at me weird. I figured most people have played a Sonic game, guess I'm just too nerdy.

Heard it at multiple places around here, the first time though was at a Shell near Tahoe, I thought I was hearing things!

Yep, the gas station right near my work also has that familar Sonic ring sfx. I should jump right onto that register, pop it, and collect me 100 rings.

I've heard the "uh-oh!" in a few places, too. It's the same sample that was used in ICQ for receiving a message.t0yrobo wrote:I've heard it before too, I think it's always been at Shell station but I'm not sure. They also go "uh-oh!" when something goes wrong.

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog in cash registers
I've heard the ring sound in public but always thought it was someone getting a text. I'll have to investigate further next time.
But why the single "ring" noise and not the "cha-ching" at the end of an act when your points are totaled?

Re: Sonic the Hedgehog in cash registers
I used to hear it all the time a couple of semesters ago when I would stop at a Mobil gas station on the way to my college classes to grab a coffee or something. Didn't realize that it was a widespread thing

I hear it all the time at a Valero near me, and a Conoco near me plays the sound when Mario gets a star off of Super Mario Sunshine when you close the register... and it was extremely badly recorded.
