The best two player Genesis games?

Post by Arvidos »

Hiya!

I picked up an old genesis at a market recently, and have started collecting some games for playing. Nice! I've always felt console gaming is at its best with multiple players though. So far, I've got Golden Axe, Toejam & Earl and Sonic 2. I'm thinking about getting Streets of Rage, (But which one is the best? All three?) Sonic 3, Golden Axe 2 and Alien Storm.

Which two player Genesis Games can you recommend?

Other than the ones you mentioned (all the Streets of Rage games are worth it), here are some fun 2-player games:

Zombies Ate My Neighbors
Contra: Hard Corps
Gunstar Heroes
MERCS
Mutant League Hockey (or Football)
Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage [edit: 1-player only, Separation Anxiety is the 2-player game...thanks to fingersmaloy for the correction!]
X-men 2
Road Rash 3

There are lots of others, too!

I second the Zombies Ate My Neighbors suggestion.
I personally like 2 player cooperative games more than single player games. There is something fun about it and with ZAMY it is not your normal sports/fighting/or Final Fight style game. It is more of an adventure/puzzle type of game.

Including the aforementioned ones:

General Chaos (possible 4 players)
Herzog Zwei (first ever RTS but little like the kind you see today)
NHL... some prefer '93, some prefer '94, some prefer '96; I prefer NHL 95
Mega Bomberman (possible 4 players)
Mickey Mouse - World of Illusion (great co-op game; younglings should enjoy it too)
Samurai Shodown (I think this is the second best next to the NeoGeo version)
Skitchin' (Road Rash, but with rollerblades)
ToeJam & Earl: Panic on Funkotron (I prefer this to the first)
WeaponLord (fighting game; chances are you'll hate this game when you first pick it up, as it seems impossible, but you should have a fun time with a second player)
X-Men 2: Clone Wars (co-op)
Yuu Yuu Hakusho (JAPANESE ONLY; 4 player fighting game by Treasure)

Most people prefer Streets of Rage II as their favourite, as it has the best graphics, biggest sprites and most awesome soundtrack. Streets of Rage III is inferior in those regards, but still easy on the eyes and has more moves absent in the other two (including the ability to run and to roll down or up). Some people actually prefer Streets of Rage 1, which is inferior in all factors, but it has a 'cool' special which calls out a police car to shoot all enemies on screen - special is the same for all characters.

Any others I can think of have ports on the SNES which most people prefer.

Someone already said it, but since it is my avatar after all, I'll reiterate: General Chaos. I never tire of it.

Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Toejam & Earl (I like the first one better IMO), NHL 98 (pull out the goalies and let some serious fun begin), and my friends and I play alot of Samurai Showdown, Mortal Kombat, and surprisingly whole lot of Power Rangers (the one based on the TV show and not the movie). It's actually a really fun fighter and I strongly suggest that you at least emulate it and give it a try.

Micro Machines might look too basic but it's loads of fun. Shame it wasn't popular in the US. It supports up to 4 players and as I understood it the additional joypad ports came with the cart (MM2), yep there was a time when Codemasters were kings of gameplay! I recommend Micro Machines Turbo Tournament '96 if you can find it.

Look again, yo.

Also, someone mentioned Spiderman & Venom: Maximum Carnage, but that game's only one-player. The two-player one was Separation Anxiety.

Also I recommend Smash TV, which is sort of like Arnold's Running Man, except more violent.
