My bad, they DID say as much.
Yeah, the response to OGRE was outstanding. I'm hoping Car Wars will be a little cheaper to support.
Pen/Paper RPG fans/gurus, some advice?
Re: Pen/Paper RPG fans/gurus, some advice?
I did quite a bit of reading, and I decided to try out Mouse Guard. I had some awesome suggestions here, and in an RPG.net thread I posted, as well as a few PMs I got from people.
I think what drew me to Mouse Guard after all was the Beliefe/Instinct/Goal system. I also read a few reviews, including one from PA Report, and they kinda sold me on the idea. I'm about 3 chapters into the rule book for MG and so far I'm enjoying the read and I think I'll enjoy the play system as well.
I can't say I look forward to being a GM, but I suppose I can try it and see what happens. Who knows, maybe I'll like it. I'll just have to read through the book and get all the info that way my friends who want to play w me can read through it as well.

Just so you know, Mouse guard is heavily based on another rpg called Burning Wheel, which is very similar but has a more Tolkien-esque setting.
Also, buy mouse guard on amazon. Its only like $45 instead of $70.

I was planning on it, but it had a 1-3 MONTH wait. Boo. My brother in law is going to split the cost w/ me tho.Retrozoa wrote:Just so you know, Mouse guard is heavily based on another rpg called Burning Wheel, which is very similar but has a more Tolkien-esque setting.

Update:
Mouse Guard seems great. We are still getting the hang of things, and we unfortunately haven't had a ton of time to really delve into the game. We've only tried to run one of the sample missions and it's a very complex system but it seems enjoyable so far.
I picked up the Pathfinder Beginner Box last night, too. So we'll be checking that out tonight. Also downloaded the Corebook for the iPad in PDF so hopefully that will help.

Re: Pen/Paper RPG fans/gurus, some advice?
Well, since Indecks bumped the thread, I guess it's time to come out of the closet and say that I'm going to try P&P RPGs again!
This came as a surprise given how much of a dreck all my previous experiences were but I know there's something great waiting for me if I try and with Car Wars getting some play, it's not like I can forget about it.
One day, out of nowhere I decided to call a friend and ask him if he's up for some roleplay. And he said yes. I quickly gathered my CW buddy, who shared many desafortunate games with me and told him we might get a group going. We vowed not to get our silly friends involved, as awesome as they are, and to start as normal guys instead of trying to take a whole bite.
I then decided to call another friend of mine, non-gamer if there was ever one, who may have not even played Tetris but I was one hundred percent sure she would love the idea. And she did and surprised me with her good understanding of what a roleplaying game is.
After getting a group and getting everyone to agree on meeting regularly I went to practically ever gaming forum known to man and spammed my questions over and over to see what people thought. Sure, a lot of it was your typical "I pitch my favourite game" with completely disregard of what I was looking for but there were a lot of valuable information there and I'm really thakful.
I wanted a narrative game* because after our plays of GURPS it soon became apparent that we frontloaded the game, getting lost into small cool stuff instead of groking the real system but that having the rules right and working would have also killed the game because we didn't really know how to use the mechanics, sure, I could picklock doors but we had no idea on how to have fun with such a thing.
Vampire: The Masquerade appeals to me because all the mechanics are very tied into the setting and the clans and kindred society workings push the game foward. It's not perfect and I was confirmed about some of it's pitfalls but it's cool and easy to find and while apparently the prewritten scenarios suck, I asked and was pointed towards a couple good ones. Right now it's almost sure we are going to play it because my friends may gift the rulebooks to me for my birthday.
We also wanted a funny game for one-shots and I looked into Paranoia because it looks easy to run. Since the computer is all powerful you can railroad players anyway you want and still make sense and that approach allows you to control the silly, which can ruin games left and right. Still, it's on limbo but given an apparent Spanish release of the latest edition and very well regarded books of compiled adventures, it has an edge over the competition which at this moment is only InSpectres, the rest aren't close enough.
This is the last frontier of gaming to me
How many sessions have you played? Tell me your stuff indecks!
*Apparently my division was not farfetched, roleplayers tend to divide games into simulationist (GURPS), narrative-driven (VtM) or game-like (D&D).

Talisman may be a good one for you guys. It is a little less complex and easy for new players. My wife got into and never really played fantasy or rpg games before.
It is an old school fantasy board game. So there is a lot of random dice rolls in it.
