Summer-themed games

Post by noiseredux »

so I sent this question to the RB-podcast:
noiseredux wrote:there are certain games I consider to be fun Summer games in the truest sense: meaning they're actually Summer-themed. Things like Jaws Unleashed come to mind, or various beach volleyball games (Summer Heat on PS2, Beach Spikers on GCN, etc). What are some Summer-themed games you guys would recommend to listeners?
Dave mostly dodged the question since he was inebriated. John came up with a couple interesting ones like Wave Race which I hadn't thought of. But I kind of thought we could stretch this out a bit more with discussion and suggestions.

Jaws Unleashed (PS2, XB)
You play as Jaws. Seriously.

And as I mentioned, I think beach volleyball games can be a lot of fun -- especially if you're playing couch co-op on a hot day (or night) with cold drinks. Beach Spikers (GCN) is really good, easy to control even for "non-gamers," and has some impressive backgrounds especially if you're lucky enough to have component cables for your Cube. Summer Heat (PS2) is similar, though not quite as good. Though still a great game if you do'nt have a Cube. I'm sure you're all familiar with DOA Xtreme (XB) and its sequel (360, PSP). There's also Outlaw Volleyball (PS2, XB) -- the PS2 version of which can still be played online via xLink Kai.

...so who else has Summer-themed games to suggest?

I wasn't inebriated (maybe a very slight buzz) and I didn't dodge the question at all...I researched my answer and told you what I tend to play (PC games).

Well, this might seem like phoning it in, but Super Mario Sunshine has a strong, summery, tropical style to it.

I know its not a fan favorite, but I've always loved it, and one of my favorite things about the game is that pleasant and relaxed atmosphere.

I think Outrun would also be a good example, as well as California Games.

I'm trying to think of more. Its actually not an easy question now that I think of it.

The Boku no Natsuyasumi (My Summer Vacation) games spring to mind immediately. I don't think any of them are localized but they are games where you assume the role of a japanese boy on summer break and you play a bunch of summer-themed mini-games. Catching fireflies and stuff.

Looks kinda fun.

Oh, totally! If I ever drive on the PCH, it will be to the sounds of The SST Band. 8)

No mention of the Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball, Noise? I know you are a big fan of the series.
