A lot of it is just the age. Most of those have passed the point where they're just the "old stuff" and are seen as collectible. Stuff like PS2 is what comprises the pile of games in the closet that the kids haven't touched in a year.
I think a lot of it is also the focus, since you have more of the folks who grew up with the SNES or whatever that have the means to indulge in some childhood nostalgia.
Also consider popularity. Objectively speaking, the DC and Saturn sold a tiny fraction of the PSX/PS2. The oXBox outsold the Gamecube.
It might rise and fall a little with the relative interest in retro gaming - same as vintage Transformers went up when the movies came out - but the actual items are only going to get rarer to find in the hands of people who have no idea what they're worth. Especially not when they can spend two minutes on the internet and see.
So we now hate people who partake in our hobby? Because of their fashion sense?
Whats the difference between a hipster liking games, a nerd liking games, a sporty person liking games? We all like games.
Also when you blame people like avgn, game chasers, etc for the peak in retro gaming, your making wank of yourself. Why does it matter if someone games because they saw a video and it reminded them of when they were younger, or if they played it at a mates house and was reminded of why they love old games or if they just never got rid of their original consoles.
Who are you to 'blame' a certain type of person for anything? How old are you? Im sure older member can say, its younger gamers fault? why did you get into retro gaming?
The point is we all share a common interest, and of course where there is demand, there are price hikes, its how the world works when what you are interested in is collecting items in a limited amount.
yeah I hardly ever find anything from before ps2 era. But god damn the time time to buy ps2 games is now. I dont think they could get any cheaper or abundant. I think Its good that people aren't treating old games as junk anymore and realising there true value. It makes it that much more exciting when you do come across a game you have been searching for. Right now Im buying all the ps2 games i want while there cheap and I'm eagerly waiting for the release of the wii U assuming that everyone will be selling there wii games. Retro games are getting appreciated a hell of alot more and I think that is a good thing.

If you go back and actually read my original post, I'm not interested in "hating" on anyone - it's obvious retro gaming has been on the rise for years now because of the various Youtube personalities and ease of access to pricing information via eBay/Amazon/the internet in general. As was already mentioned by another poster, there are more and more people of the NES/SNES era that can now afford to buy these games that may be nostalgic to them. This topic was about how hard it's getting to find good games in the wild for a decent price, not about bringing a certain group of people down because they enjoy the same games I do.
Many things that are collectable are commanding a premium right now. Pinball and retro games especially. I think several factors are involved in this.
1. The economy is getting better and people are having more disposable income to spend on luxury items.
2. Shows on TV like storage wars which make people think that everything "old" no matter how crappy is worth a small fortune.
3. E-bay. Again people look at how much things are listed for on e-bay and automatically think that their item is worth that much. What they fail to realize is that most often those items don't sell. (its called completed auctions people)
4. Retro gaming collecting seems to be "in" right now. Its a combination of people that grew up with these games now being adults with money to spend and the attention the hobby gets from internet shows such as AVGN.
The above being said there are deals to find out there you just have to look harder. Remember if people are willing to pay ridiculous prices, thtats what people are going to sell them for.
I don't remember the last time I found any sort of video game at all in a yard sale. I've been looking diligently, too; this must just be a total dead zone for this sort of thing.

Not saying we should hate anyone but "hipster" must have a different meaning in Australia. Here there are "hipsters" who buy retro games not because they like playing them but because it shows how cool they are, they also do the same for vinyl. Now there are probably plenty of so called hipsters who actually like the stuff, but for a lot of them its just a trend.
