Where I'm at: 30 push-ups, 35 sit-ups, and running 1.5 miles in about 14.5 minutes. Any tips for increasing my performance?
Joining the Navy?
Air Force. Man, getting in shape for one of the two "wimpy" branches (the Navy being the other one) is hard enough. I can't even imagine trying to join the Marines...

I'm ex-Navy. We think of ourselves as the branch that works smarter and not harder. We deploy more on average than the other branches, though.

What you want to do is to stop timing yourself on the run and stretch it to two miles. Get used to running that and then you'll own the mile and a half whenever you need to. For sit ups make sure you have something securing your feet - I believe that's how the Air Force PT test is set up. It'll help your form.

For push ups you might want to hit the gym and develop your upperbody. Bench, and lats will help you strengthen that whole muscle group. Once you do that, push ups will come naturally.

My AF recruiter said the same thing about his branch... I think every branch thinks of themselves as the best. One thing I've heard from multiple people is that the AF has nicer bases (fewer people to spend their money on compared to the Army and Navy). Hopefully they're right.

I have been running 2 miles, then taking my total time, dividing by 4, then multiplying by 3 to determine how long it takes me to run 1.5 miles. I suppose if I just work on getting comfortable with running 2 miles, I could then practice running 1.5 miles at a faster pace than I would attempt 2.

I'll try that. I've been doing them unsecured so far.

Would lifting weights standing up work? I can find weights at thrift stores, but I'd have to pay for a gym membership to do bench work. Or drop $400 for a set of my own.

That wouldn't be a bad thing for you but it won't work on any muscle groups directly tied to what you're doing when you do a push up. Is there not a YMCA near you?

I can promise you that 'work smarter, not harder' is more of a punchline than anything else in the Army or Marine Corps.

My advice: Hire BusomJack, professional trainer.

I haven't watched day time tv in a while. I don't remember it all being DNA tests and fake court shows. White trash at its finest.

Having served 8 years in the Army I can vouch for that.

I don't know how long s1mplehumar's location has been Ragol Forrest 1 but I approve of this.

I love it when developers make good use of the Wii remote's speaker. Puts a smile on my face every time.

I remember a minigame in Rayman: Raving Rabbids that used it quite brilliantly; I'm surprised that few other devs used it in creative ways! Imagine holding it up to your ear as a cell phone or walkie-talkie in a game! Okay, maybe the speaker isn't quite that good, but you get the idea.
