Were there any n64 games that ran at 60fps?

Post by klayman »

After playing a few n64 games again recently (ocarina of time specifically) i've noticed that most n64 games run at what would be considered today as a crawling framerate. Zelda OoT caps out at something like 20 fps which can get kind of irritating. The only game i can think of that ran a solid 60fps was F-Zero, but other than that i can't think of anything. Anyone know of some other n64 games that ran at a constant 60fps?

P.S. Bonus question - Do the gamecube versions of OoT or MM run any smoother than the n64 version?

Well... Goldeneye and perfect dark could fly up to 60 fps once and a while.

Nope. Still choppy. They are emulated.

Yep. F-Zero X is certifiably awesome. Ridge Racer 64also runs at 60, but good luck getting a handle on the physics.

haha i've played perfect dark and i definitely wouldn't call it a solid 60fps. sometimes if you look in a corner or the sky the framerate might go up but that's just because they didn't put a limiter on it. I wanna know if there's any games that are actually supposed to run at a solid 60fps at all times.

And about zelda, that's kind of disappointing :C but i guess i shouldn't have such high expectations for a promotional game. Still might be worth it for me to get them just for the slightly higher resolution and a couple reworked polygons. I think my friend has a copy he doesn't want so i can save myself a good sum of money.

I thought the framerate was noticeably improved a little with the GC Zelda ports, to be honest. It's still not perfect but better than what I remember with the N64 versions.

Kind of like shmups, it's funny how the slowdown essentially helped a bit with some games though. Like with Perfect Dark... the XBLA port to me ended up being quite a bit harder at times because the framerate was way smoother, so the whole game ran faster and was more intense. But yeah after playing that version I probably can't go back to the original.

F-zero, I remember being smooth. I remember Ridge Racer as being 30 Fps. Are you sure it runs @ 60 fps?

OP, what TV are you playing your N64 games on? It can make a huge difference on how choppy things look.

I don't think a different TV will fix framerate issues.

Nah, of course not. But on newer flat screens I find it really noticeable, my HDTV really struggles with the N64. I've found that on tube TV's it isn't as noticeable.

How are you guys noticing that the framerate is 20 vs 30 or 60? Are you playing the game in an emulator with the fps displayed in some corner?

The few N64 games that I have played on the Wii (Mario Kart 64, Ocarina of Time) seem fine to me.
