The Darkness II

Post by Gamerforlife »

Just got this from Gamefly since they didn't have Lollipop Chainsaw apparently. The game starts off with a bang. The first fifteen minutes or so are completely awesome....

then you get to the first boss fight, which is complete and utter shit

A retarded monkey could have designed a better boss fight than this

What's with otherwise really good games having lame boss battles?

It was the major weak area of Arkham Asylum...

Given that first taste, I'm not at all enthused about the other shitty boss fights this game will have :(

Beside boss fights require genuine creativity and intelligence. It's easy to design a shooter where they just throw a bunch of enemies at you for you to gun down. A boss fight requires more thought than that, which apparently most designers don't have

It's a lost art. There aren't many modern games I have played that have GOOD boss fights

Great boss fights were a key element of a LOT of the older games I played years ago

I enjoyed it far more than the original overall. The comic style graphics appealed to me much more than the look of the original. The boss fights aren't that great but I enjoyed the overall story. 8)

Meh, just another mediocre shooter

Your dark powers are weak as shit. You can't even grab a guy with your tentacle until you stun him first, which is fucking retarded. The coolest power from the first game I don't even seem to be able to use anymore. The darkling creatures that follow you are every bit as useless as they were in the first game. Enemies are bullet sponges in true video game form. Bleh, this is boring.

At least the story is good. Christ, I'm getting tired of saying that about games. Why can't things PLAY well too?

I picked up The Darkness II, but haven't opened it yet. It was on sale for 12 bucks new at Best Buy. I enjoyed the first game just enough to warrant spending 12 bucks for the sequel. I want to know what happened to Jackie after the first game! It's next on my backlog.

I bought the first one because I am a huge Mike Patton fan. I wasn't expecting much, so I wasn't let down too bad. The AI was crap, the Darklings were very useless as you mentioned, and you spend more time shooting out lights than people. I still enjoyed it for what it was.

I finished it, posted my thoughts in the Games Beaten thread. I rated it a 5 out of 10, completely underwhelmed. It's a step back in every way possible and doesn't expand on the first game's potential at all. In fact, they removed or significantly reduced all of the coolest parts of the first game. It's mostly just a dumb Call of Duty clone now

The first game was, and still is, one of my favorite games this gen. It wasn't a perfect game, but it had some inspiration, creativity, and originality. Something rare in modern games, something that seems typical of Starbreeze games though. The sequel can now take its place as one of my biggest disappointments this gen. The switch in developers is very noticeable, going from Starbreeze to the no talent hacks at Digital Extremes, who basically just shat out a Call of Duty clone. Anybody can do that
