saturn shmups and rpgs

Post by dlmvii »

Hello all
I just started to get back into playing my older games and getting a slightly larger collection, and I'm currently fixated on my saturn. I bought it probably 4 or so years ago, and got some garbage games bundled with it (I think the only one I ever played was Darius Gaiden, the rest were sports games and the like which I don't really care for.) I did the whole swap trick thing for a while to play stuff, but as some you can possibly agree with, it's much cooler to own the original games.
So anyways, I'm mainly looking for (vertical) shmups and rpgs, and preferably not imports.
For rpgs, I currently have the big name ones:
Panzer Dragoon Saga, Shining Force III, Albert Odyssey, and Dragon Force
but no shmups :(
Curious as to any other recommended US rpgs, or US shmups (Or even imports I guess, since a command of the japanese language isn't really required to play these)
And as much as I like to, I don't think I have it in me to put down 200$ for Radiant Silvergun :(

Theres really not many SHMUPS released for the Saturn in the US, I honestly can only think of one that was released in the US - Galactic Attack (AKA Layer Section). Anyways, here's some of the less expensive SHMUPS that are worth importing;

Batsugun
Battle Garegga
Cotton 2
Detana Twinbee Deluxe
Game Tengoku
Gekirindan
Gokujou Parodius Deluxe
Gradius Deluxe Pack
Metal Black
Sengoku Blade
Sexy Parodius
Skull Fang
Sol Divide
Soukyugurentai
Strikers 1945
Strikers 1945 II
ThunderForce Gold Pack I
ThunderForce Gold Pack II
ThunderForce V
Twinkle Star Sprites

Some more, but these are a bit more pricey;

Blast Wind
Cotton Boomerang
HyperDuel
Radiant Silvergun
Stellar Assault SS

Also, while not technically an RPG, the two Discworld games were released in the US and are a pair of amazing point & click adventures - also, Magic Knight Rayearth is another US RPG, but a bit on the pricey side. If you're not bothered about using a translation FAQ, then these RPGs ae worth an import;

Langrisser Collection (collects all 5 Langrisser games in one package)
Nanatsu Kaze no Shima Monogatari (Enix developed graphical RPG adventure)
Policenauts (Awesome graphical adventure from Hideo Kojima)
Princess Crown (Action adventure with RPG elements)
Shining Force III: Part II & III (continue the story on from Part 1, plus the premium disc is a nice addition if you can afford it)
Terra Phantastica (little-known strategy RPG)
Wachenroder (amazing steam-punk SRPG, best on the Saturn imo)
Wizardry Nemesis (dungeon crawler RPG with some elements in English)
