I'm fairly certain there are nations with even less healthy lifestyles than ours. After all, we're a lot closer to the top of the pile in terms of life expectancy than the bottom.Flake wrote:You are completely unaware of the rest of the world.Busomjack wrote:A big reason why is because many Americans have terrible lifestyles. I think many Americans are convinced that they don't need live healthfully since the medical system will bail them out. Really irresponsible.
In defense of the US though, I do think Europe has more smokers than the USA.
As for politics, yeah too many Americans focus exclusively on issues like abortion and gays. In Europe these are non-issues mostly.
Why does the US get ripped on so much?

That's due to advancements in medical science and healthcare, not due to healthy lifestyles. Americans are not living longer, they're being kept alive longer.BoringSupreez wrote:I'm fairly certain there are nations with even less healthy lifestyles than ours. Americans do not trust the medical system. Or haven't you read the news in the last 10 years. Europeans live crappy and unhealthy lives, too. Do you actually even know any Europeans?
As for those political 'non-issues' you listed...wow. Pick up a newspaper, read a book, do anything except be so incredibly wrong.

Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

We certainly drink a lot. Same for smoking.Flake wrote:Americans do not trust the medical system. Or haven't you read the news in the last 10 years. Europeans live crappy and unhealthy lives, too. Do you actually even know any Europeans?

Well abortion really is a non issue here except Ireland and Malta. Gay marriage on the other hand isn't a law in most countries yet, but the debate about it isn't so....vengeful as in the US. Homophobia exists aplenty, but mainstream politicians usually just don't bother coming out to say if they are Pro or Against.

Americans don't trust the medical system because it puts them in tremendous debt due to greed from insurance companies and lack of health insurance. Access is still good however, especially for a nation of 300 million people.Flake wrote:Americans do not trust the medical system. Or haven't you read the news in the last 10 years. If you're sick, you will likely get good care, whether or not you stay in your home afterwards however will depend on what kind of insurance if any you have.
I have lived in Europe and they seem to have a more metropolitan lifestyle. More people live in cities and thus there is less dependence on vehicles for transportation. People do a lot more walking than most Americans and on average I see far fewer fat people. It's not an issue of their medical system, I'm not making an issue of that. It's their lifestyle which based on my observations appears to be superior. Only exception are the large number of tobacco users.
I know there are Americans who care about political issues that actually matter but I unfortunately live in the deep south and here people base their vote on stupid shit like believing Obama to be a Muslim, that he's not really a citizen, all total bullshit. I remember when Kerry ran everyone was against him because he was pro-choice and wasn't anti-gay enough.
I know that's not how everyone in the country thinks but this type of single issue voter demographic is sizable enough to matter in national elections.

I'll say this once, and leave it up in the air.
The main draw of healthcare jobs in the US is the large pay. We go to this Obamacare, or whatever you feel like calling it, and the doctors can lose pay, though they might not. If they were to, we would lose doctors, which is already a field where we are lacking. Less doctors= bad, in most people's eyes.
Also, I'll point out the horror stories I've heard about places with free healthcare. A gunshot victim I know of waiting 14 hours before even seeing a nurse, people dying waiting on those with lesser problems, etc.
And mentioning countries with worse health habits than us, what country was it that had the little boy smoking that got the internet in an uproar?

Indonesia. The country is a plutocracy and thus there are little to no regulations against cigarette advertising. I believe the country has the highest percentage of smokers in the world.Forlorn Drifter wrote:I'll say this once, and leave it up in the air.

Do you believe every lie you hear? The rampant ignorance and deliberate dumbing down of the populace is why Texas gets such a bad rap.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Also, I'll point out the horror stories I've heard about places with free healthcare.
