The teaching English gig is starting to get harder and harder these days to find, at least with pay that'll keep you fed. It is a shame that it's so hard to get a leg up. In truth, though, they do also need more manual labor, and they've been reluctant to allow laborers in, despite that need.

I know it was 2-3 years ago (in Japan). It is worse now?

I guess I'll be better off now that I have an actual teaching cert., but it's a bit scary that I would even need to use that to get a leg up.

Were you guys ALTs? I met a few ALTs and all of them hated it. Is it really that bad?

If you're all alone and on your own, yes. If you take the easy route by shacking up with a Japanese girl/guy and/or getting a job at a Japanese company, you're in there.

Permanent status takes a long time, but not impossible.
5-10 years would usually do it.
If you're married with kids for 3 years, the unwritten rule seems to be that short. I suppose it makes you seem to have more roots than someone without kids.

I did some kindergarten work part time on the side. I also worked in eikaiwa, juku and also worked directly (no damned middleman!) for a private school 学院.

I love it you guys pretty much turned the thread around and just talk about immigration in Japan. But I did not mind it, its quiet informal.
