yeah i would have linked to the LE on newegg ($15 shipped!) but it's out of stock right now.

it was out of stock when i first saw it so i did the "auto notify" thing on the site and it was back in stock 2 days later.

i don't think the faceplate will fit on the slim model though

Well, it's a Valve game post Half-Life 2, so, it'll be activated through Steam regardless of how you buy it. You can buy it on disc, but it's just an installer cache. Still, physical copy. Honestly, I tend to do that for Steamworks enabled games, if I'm buying them as new releases, I have disc copies of Skyrim, Fallout NV, Metro 2033...all of which just register to my Steam account anyway.

IMO, it's an odd game to split hairs over, considering the online co-op focus. If you don't have XBL Gold, you're stuck playing with bots. Meanwhile the PC/Mac version is often very cheap via Steam, in contrast with Valve publicly complaining that they're forced to charge for DLC on XBL that they'd rather give out for free (and do...for PC/Mac). Remember when the Sacrifice DLC came out, which is (still) 560 MS points? Valve put L4D and L4D2 on sale for $6.80 on Steam (approximately the same cost as 560 MS points), to spite them.
