Its interesting, because whilst I really started gaming properly in the 16 bit generation, I can happily enjoy games back to the 8 bit era. Go back pre-NES/SMS to the old home computers (spectrum for example) and the 2600 and the likesthough, and I struggle to maintain any interest at all.dsheinem wrote:I sometimes feel sorry for people who haven't had the opportunity to experience gaming since it basically began in the mid-late 1970s and very early 1980s. Playing a VCS game for them likely doesn't invoke any of the nostalgia that it does for those of us born around that time. I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to kind of grow up with the medium.

It's great to see these young gamers appreciate all of those classic games.

I feel sorry for everyone who didn't experience the 90's as a child. It was as if the entire world was pandering specifically to you.
Re: Cool games released on your birth year
Born in August of 85, the same year and month the NES was released int he USA, got you all beat.

Is it really that odd? I'm sure many film buffs own several movies that are DECADES older than they are.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Strange to think that you young guys play and own a bunch of retro games released before you were even born... The only games I own older than me are for the Atari 2600.

Well said. I'm quite fond of silent films, but that doesn't mean I was born in the 1890's.AppleQueso wrote:Is it really that odd? Re: Cool games released on your birth year
Maybe not, but I am genuinely more amazed by Trilobit's Atari 2600 (and Viznut's VIC-20) demos than I am by any modern game or movie with top of the line graphics/CGI like Crysis. In fact I am often, espescially when I was just getting into the pre-NES stuff, amazed by old games graphics while it's rare that I am amazed or impressed by a modern game's graphics. It's way more cool and impressive to see an old machine being pushed to it's limit (and beyond) with creative programming tricks and loads of hard work and technical understanding than to see some ultra realistic showcase of modern technology that is poorly optimized and wasteful, even though the difference in graphics would be very minor (to the "untrained eye") when compared to a PS2->PS3 style leap in technology.dsheinem wrote:I sometimes feel sorry for people who haven't had the opportunity to experience gaming since it basically began in the mid-late 1970s and very early 1980s. I'll prefer rotating cubes over photorealism
And yeah, I wish I was born earlier. I'd be better with computers if I grew up before there were any dumbed down/user friendly operating systems and there are many games and gaming/computer phenomena (arcades, LAN parties, Ultima online, software cracking, demoparties etc) I wish I experienced back when they were new/relevant/still existed.
