Why not just type something into the big white box like. . . I don't know. . . .

Frankly the whole "like" thing annoys me. Instead of just clicking on a button, why not say something personal? Or chime in on the conversation?
I understand its use in commenting systems, especially ones that track users total likes (like back when the discussion on autoblog was somewhat enjoyable) but otherwise don't see the point.
