I'm pretty sure no one has quite so bluntly insulted people who disagree with same-sex marriage in this thread, but there has been plenty of lively and civil debate on the issue so far. So while I personally disagree with your position, I wouldn't assume that you are an ignorant rural bigot. That said, by stating your view publicly you certainly should expect critical examination of the position and your reasoning.

Or did I miss an outpuring of redneck jokes along the way?

Bigoted, Rural, and Ignorant are all words that have been used; however, in my experience city folk believe all rural people are "Rednecks."

Yeah, haven't seen anyone say that. If you believe marriage is between a man and a woman, that's awesome! In the U.S. you can hold whatever beliefs you want, meaning that if that's what you believe, it doesn't make you bigoted, rural, ignorant, or a redneck.

However, if you believe that your beliefs are superior to everyone elses, and that those who disagree or don't fit into your belief system should still be forced to abide by it, that could put you in the bigoted category, although that's not necessarily the best word for it.

But if you want to specify a specific place where the 'people of this forum' have, in majority numbers, called you those things, please do. Because I think they would probably like to clarify their positions.

Having spent the past 17 years of my life in North Carolina, I feel fully entitled to say fuck my state, fuck my legislature, and fuck the stupid fucking morons that infest my state. I wish I could say I'm surprised, but that doesn't diminish the rage and disappointment that I feel. As if John Edwards didn't shame the state enough, we need this shit, too?

Sorry if my colorful post offended anyone. I'm beyond pissed, though it turned out exactly the way I expected it to. God forbid the South do anything except take a huge fucking leap backwards....

There are morons everywhere man. What saddens me are the people who think the "taught the gays a lesson".

This is about civil rights, not butt penis activity. People shouldn't have to vote on civil rights.

If people vote, I can't see gay marriage becoming legal in a long, long time. There are too many bigots and the voting makes it socially acceptable to put down gay people because it because a matter of opinion, so as to speak.

No referendum is made without knowing the result beforehand either.

It's not just about gay marriage. Here's the text.

Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.

While yes, it constitutionally bans already illegal same sex marriages, it does more than that. No more common law marriage. Also, because a legal union is required, unmarried women won't get protections under domestic abuse laws. Yes, there are those who argue that they are still protected under assault laws, but those aren't as severe or far reaching. Those don't cover stalking and intimidation, for example. In addition to that, it's like the difference between murder and a hate crime murder; the victim's family will want that extra sentencing to feel that justice has been served.

Not only that, but it will also harm the children of unmarried couples. Health insurance, for example, is going to be a huge grey area for those children, and given this state's recent legislative and judicial trend, it's not going to end well for them.

This amendment was about so much more than gay marriage, but because most North Carolinians are traditional, conservative homophobes, that's what its supporters publicized because they knew that's what would get it passed.

That's bullshit. I don't care if you think it's a right or not, preventing someone from accessing the same social benefits as everyone else on the basis of being gay is stupid and bigoted.

Opposition to gay marriage is simply absurd. An amendment that restricts the right of private individuals to enter into a contractual agreement is disgusting and textbook authoritarianism.

Wow. It's not like there are so many problems in the world. Wasting time debating and passing laws so the religious nuts can be bigger dicks towards gay people is obviously something that should be on the top of the agenda. More proof that western civilization is past its peak, and we are in a downward spiral like the one that lead from Ancient Greece and Rome to the middle ages.

I realize that it's tough on the women, especially if they were raped. I sympathize. But...

But??? No no no no. Just stop at sympathy. Don't pretend that you can stand behind any justifiable moral principle to tell someone that an abortion is worse than carrying the product of rape to term. Just stop.
