I highly recommend the SMT series. Its my favorite of what I consider to be the 3 main Jrpg series(DQ, FF, SMT).

I wish I could play the main/original series without an emulator.

I'm pretty sure you can get them to work on a US snes by cutting the tabs off a cheating device.

I consider them to be the 3 main simply because they were the 3 big series that started on Famicom and are still going strong today. I am aware that there are more series that started back then and are still going on like Ys or Phantasy star(and those games are good) but, I feel that FF, DQ, SMT(especially after P3) are the more popular ones, in the US at least.

I'm guessing he means that he can't play them without a translation patch. It's still feasible to play the translated version on an SNES, you would just need a repro cart or a powerpak.

I also don't have an SNES... yet. :P But man, those repro carts are a good reason to get one at some point.

Also, what's the difference between Shin Megami Tensei and regular Megami Tensei? Is the "Shin" series sequels or remakes or total reinterpretations?

The original Megami Tensei games were on the Famicom, and were the beginning of the entire Megaten series (which encompasses all of this, SMT, Persona, Digital Devil Saga, etc). Shin Megami Tensei is not canonically linked to Megami Tensei, but borrows many conventions such as demon recruitment and fusion, moon phases, and the overall setting of the games (fighting demons in Japan with devil summoning programs). There is a Super Famicom remake of the original 2 Megami Tensei games called Kyuyaku Megami Tensei.

A side note worth mentioning is that the US releases of every Megaten game after SMT Nocturne all have the name "Shin Megami Tensei" attached to them, even though they're technically not the same series. For example, Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 in America is simply Persona 3 in Japan.
