Shin Megami Tensei

Post by fox099 »

Has anyone played the Shin Megami Tensei games before? I am playing Persona 3: FES but I was wondering about the other games from the original series and other spin offs. Are they worth picking up on Play-Asia?

I'm playing Nocturne right now. It's really fun but the music is a little generic, it also sounds mono. Although, it really cool to start a random battle with guitars strumming in the background. There is no voice acting, but I don't think any SMT game has that. The art direction is basically the same as the other games but darker, hence the name. The most noticable feature in the game is the ability to recruit demons you encounter to your party.

I can't [morally] play any of the SMT games, but I hear they're not too bad. An interesting fact is that "Jack Brothers", a game in the series, was released on the virtual boy! Yeah, Atlus was always been odd like that.

I recommend other SMT games, even the Persona 1 and 2 for PS1. However, I think it might be a let down for you because you've played Persona 3 first. That is a very good game. The only other game on par with it is perhaps Nocturne, but that is one hard game and might frustrate a lot of gamers.

I do agree that there are general commonality with all the games like recruiting demons and art direction, but each games are unique in their own right.

I just read a bit about these games and it's all a huge mess with all the different spin-offs. It's like the Megaman of RPGs, but worse :) Ok that is not meant to offend.

So basically the Personal games are the decent games out of the whole deal, and the other games are probably quite heavy on grinding?

I played Nocturne. Never finished it. The game is more style than substance and it's so blatantly cheap at times. Not one of those games where it's always your own fault when you die.

I tried playing Digital Devil Saga, bored me to tears. I didn't even finish the first installment. Gameplay was just bland and boring. Based on my experiences so far, I'd say there's a reason why the Megaten games are cult hits and not up there with more popular titles. They suck. Their only real value is there supposed rarity

For gothy rpgs, I'd rather play a Shadow Hearts game. At least they're somewhat entertaining

I haven't gotten too far into P3:FES, the fact that you scale the same dungeon every time is very repetitive and I don't think I'll be able to keep interest for that long because of it. Social links are really cool though.

I agree with the repetitiveness of the dungeon, but the combat is relatively quick and the game is more than just that. To me, it is the social link and the story that got me sucked in. I also love fusing monsters; it never gets old to me.

I find this amusing, considering you had a SMT avatar for so long. What changed your mind?

If you're interested in the original games in the series, the Super Famicom Shin Megami Tensei games are like hardcore dungeon crawlers. Combat is decent, but my favorite part stems from the art and philosophy presented in these games. Demon recruitment and fusion are both present. These games are pretty long and convoluted though, so be wary of that. In my opinion, their biggest flaw is that the dungeons are impossible to navigate because every wall is identical.

Megami Tensei actually predates Shin Megami Tensei, but I have no experience with those.
