Getting satellite TV, anyone got any tips or suggestions?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

So now I've got a new question: do any of you know of a good DVR that doesn't cost multiple hundreds of dollars and doesn't have a subscription fee like Tivo? I didn't want to rent one from the satellite company, because they wanted a $100 activation fee in addition to $6 per month. I'd much rather own mine.
Man, there used to be a company out there called ReplayTV. They were TiVo's main competitor for a year or so, and they didn't have a monthly fee. They even had commercial skip sensors (worked 99% of the time for us). Only problem was that they weren't HD compatible. They were only standard def. Maybe see if they're still around?

Also, this could go against your 'multiple hundreds' rule, but you could buy a cheaper computer from ebay, or craigslist, etc. And put a Tuner card in there, then plug your dish cable into that and use it to DVR shows with Media Center.

I actually have a PC already set up for all that (for use as a DVR for a non-cable video provider. I forgot all about it). Only problem is, it's on the other end of the house from my TV, currently in use as a "family" computer. Maybe I could take the card out and put it in my other computer. Does Vista Basic have the same Media Center functions that XP Media Center Edition does?

I believe Vista and Windows 7 include Media Center in all iterations. But don't quote me on that.

Windows Media Center is not that great, try out Boxee.

I'm very sorry to hear you have satellite internet. I'm familiar with Hughsnet. It's absolutely terrible.

Relevant if you're interested in AMC shows.

I know a family in my area that had to choose between dial-up and Hughesnet, and they decided both were so bad that they didn't subscribe to either. It's that lousy.

But with my internet, what am I supposed to do with a Boxee? From what I saw on the website, it looks like it's just a streaming box. I didn't see any DVR features mentioned.

It has live TV abilities and DLNA support. There's also MythTV Which is also a better option than Windows Media Center. (Except you have to build it for Windows. There's a no brainer tutorial on how to do that ... or you could run something that manages hardware and all these software suites much better. Which, if you're building a pure PVR/Media center, I would strongly suggest looking into), but there's also MANY other options: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... e_packages

All I want out of a DVR is basically a HDD that hooks up to my TV and acts like a VCR. I don't need fancy features, just the ability to tell the device to record channel x at time y for length z. I'm thinking I'm going to end up going with using my PC as the DVR, as it looks to be the cheapest option.

How about this: pay me whatever you are paying your TV provider, and I will download every show you desire, copy them to a USB drive, and mail them to you weekly.
Selling half my NES/SNES/PS1 collection (ending Dec 1):

I'd rather buy the Youtube DVD set, TBH.
