Explain to me how this works. Do I get any free book just for walking into a comic book store? Or do I have to spend a certain amount of money?

There are certain comics put out by publishers that are free on that day. Here's a list of the books that EVERY comic book shop that's participating should have (which there's none that I've heard of before that's not participating in the U.S.):

DC COMICS THE NEW 52 SPECIAL ED
IMAGE 20
MEGA MAN
MOUSE GUARD LABYRINTH & MORE HC
PEANUTS ADVENTURE TIME FLIPBOOK
STAR WARS SERENITY
TRANSFORMERS #80.5
YO GABBA GABBA FREE COMIC BOOK TIME

2012 Silver Books

WALT DISNEYS DONALD DUCK FAMILY COMICS
WITCHBLADE UNBALANCED PIECES
WORLDS OF ASPEN

In addition to those, there's a lot of indie published comics that don't make the list ahead of time, and a lot of shops give out free copies of local comics or comics that they're trying to promote for their particular shop. A lot of shops also have some sort of sale or event surrounding free comic book day.

Do you just get one book? Or is everyone going to take as many free ones as possible?

In other words, how early should I be hitting up the shop?

If youre cool with the person you can have lots.

Some only give a couple to each customer in case it gets busy so they wont run out.

They dont want to ruin it by not having enough free comics on free comic book day.

Sadly There's no comic store nearby me anymore.

My local shop closed about 4 years ago!

Other comic shops are too far away.

It depends on the shop. Some let you take one of every copy, some place limits. But pretty much every shop is one copy per customer per book.

And if you just have to have a certain book, then yes, I'd advise going early in the day.

I'm totally gonna pick up that free Buffy for myself. Hopefully, I can get a Sonic and a Mega Man book too.

I always make a big deal out of this holiday. I round people up and go all over the place to hit up all the comic shops in the area (and where I'm living now, it's a pretty big area). I really like introducing friends who aren't super-into comics into the world of collecting.

As for titles I especially want: Sonic the Hedgehog is my main priority - I have a complete collection of the series and can't miss an issue! I'm really looking forward to Dinosaurs vs. Aliens, which looks cheesy AND has Grant Morrison writing. The Mouse Guard book looks pretty hardcore - I've been meaning to give that series a try.
