In Mass, the first ticket does not give you any points but it still costs you money for 6 years. That's because you get an insurance discount (7%?) for each year of incident free driving for the past 6 years. So you only get a discount of 35% instead of 42% until it goes off the record. So if you pay around $1000 for insurance (before discounts), you're paying $70 extra each year because of the ticket.
