I don't know how similar out projectors are, but I totally know the feeling of wanting to use it for "BIG" movies.
Animated movies look gorgeous on a projector. IRON GIANT, ALADDIN, UP, etc. All the little details really show.
Of course STAR WARS looks amazing.
MICROCOSMOS on blu ray played on a projector will knock your socks off. I can't recommend it enough.
Surprisingly PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE is another great projector movie as is THE MUPPET MOVIE.
Super hero movies like BATMAN (1989), and IRON MAN usually fair very well on a projector.
I'd shy away from movies with dark environments such as ALIEN. Also, unfortunately the Indiana Jones trilogy is better suited for the small screen. The green screen stuff is hard to watch.

Re: Bluray suggestions for projection
Again, Thanks all for the suggestions. I own most of them on DVD so I will be playing with upscaling before purchasing blurays - unless its like the new Wizard of Oz and its stupid to not buy it in HD.
I made a change on my original order and picked up Hellboy II instead of Tron Legacy. I was going to pickup T2, but apparently the none Skynet edition is a poor transfer. Tron legacy was $16 and Hellboy II was $5 (used prices) so I opted for the cheaper.
Thanks for that response AppleQueso. As much as I hate the green shift, well HD LOTR is still HD LOTR...Ill just have to live with it.
Cronozilla, does that extra 15 minutes really make Avatar a better film?
My projectors are:
Backyard:
1. A debranded Sanyo PDG-DHT8000L
2. EIKI LC-X986
Screen Porch:
3. Benq GP-1 - LED projector
4. crappy old RCA briefcase projector
Backup/inside use:
5. Tilex Firefly P250
1. I just recently picked up the 8000L from a company going out of business (but I might be selling soon since I can get about seven times what I paid for it).
2. The Eiki I have two extra bulbs for, so it will be my go to for a long time. I paid for a lot from a church that was moving and got two of these and two 10ft x 12ft screens, but have sold the other and about to sell the screens. Only 3000 lumens, but the five strand BNC input and 70-120mm and 30mm lenses, means I can use it in a variety of situations, including back projection (if need be).
3. My favorite projector I own. Its only 200 lumens, but being led based it is instant on and off and is plenty bright when it is dark out. I have used it to watch alot of tv, the only thing it fails at is 8 and 16 bit games. LED projectors have a curved focus - meaning the corners are soft (slightly out of focus). Which is fine for tvs, movies, and most modern games, but playing an NES platformer, it is painfully obvious.
4. Its old, big, was cheap, and its kinda loud, but it still puts out a gorgeous 640x480 image at 8ft about 25 feet away. Used when we have a crowd, if not I just use the Benq.
5. I paid $40 for this little guy which is more than I wanted to, but it is an ultra short throw that uses a halogen bulb. So my bulb life might only be 50 hours, but my new bulbs are like $3 online. Its loud, like 40ish db loud, but it also throws up a 6ft image mere feet from the screen. This one is really only pulled out if we are having a party, or lanparty. We did play 4 player Halo Reach coop on this and the Benq on my porch not to long ago (before the RCA) and it was pretty awesome. Being a 200 lumen short throw, it is fairly bright, but again 640x480 max.
When I buy a house (hopefully by the end of June) I will be building a theater room, much like Luke has, but until then my projectors spend alot of their time in cases. If we get one of the houses we are looking at right now, well itll be nuts what we do with it - I should never have the option of an additional 3 acres to play with and access to real construction vehicles, nor should I have vaulted ceilings.
Edit:
I just watched the trailer for MicroCosmos. Luke, why didnt you tell me about this before?
That just shot to the top of the to buy list - well right after the BBC Planet Dinosaur bluray. Its region 2, but I can hack the player to be region free.

You'll love it. It's a rare documentary that you can watch over and over and over again.
Still thinking about other movies. 2001:A SPACE ODYSSEY. MST3K makes you feel like you're in the theater with the cast, but again, it's not really worth using bulb life on.
The Man with no name trilogy looks great on a projector.
Hmm. Any movie with panning views of enormous landscapes usually works for me.

Open Range would look good. One of my favorite westerns.Luke wrote:

Re: Bluray suggestions for projection
Ah, man, sorry I didn't respond earlier.
Yes, the added scenes and differences really do make the movie different. The only act that is somewhat untouched and the same is the second act. But both act 1 and 3 feel somewhat more fleshed out than before. The stuff that was cut wasn't like ... random B.S.
I would suggest looking up SpyeGlass or Vikuiti projection film to really make the projector image pop ... but they're pretty expensive.
It's a microscopic prism based film you can apply to almost any piece of glass to make a phenomenal quality rear-projection screen. It looks vastly better than any screen I've ever seen for a projector. (the 3M Vikuiti film, though, is stupid expensive)
as you can see the image quality is pretty nuts.
