I am finally catching up to 2006 and getting a bluray player. No its not a functioning PS3, its a refurbished Panasonic DMP-BD75. The main reason I am getting a bluray player is because I recently purchased an hd projector for long distance projection - it has a 120mm lens on it so it puts up a 12ft diagonal 4:3 image at 70ft. And when running movies off of my 1998 era KLH dvd player they are fuzzy. I could use a PC for it but on movie night Id care to not think that much (and take down needs to be fast incase of rain), so for $50 I am getting a bluray player (actually two but thats because they support DLNA and my porch theater can use one aswell - but it only projects about 6.3ft 4:3 image and DVDs look fine on it).
So enough back story, on to the question in the topic. Since I am buying a bluray player, I am trying to only buy blurays for movies that are enhanced on the big screen (my dvd collection got very bogged down with documentaries and oddball movies that were cheap at the time). The obvious answer to this is summer blockbusters. Most if not all of them are more fun movies on a bigger screen. Then again some classics scalewell and some dont. So what movies can yall think of?
My buy list right now is:
Wizard of Oz
Tintin
Stargate - mostly because it is $6 on Amazon - but it is a personal favorite of mine.
Tron Legacy
I already have the original trilogy of Star Wars in HD (both Special Edition and Despecialized). And I am not buying the current Lord of the Rings since the blurays are very green.

Mad Max, Inception.

Cause what? Like the tint runs green? 'Splain.fastbilly1 wrote:And I am not buying the current Lord of the Rings since the blurays are very green.
I would say:
The Dark Knight
Jaws (in 3 months)
Rio
Terminator 2
War of the Worlds (T. Cruise)
Avatar
EDIT: A classic pick would be North by Northwest one of my favorite Hitchcock movies.
Let strength be granted, so the world might be mended...so the world might be mended.

I'm guessing that he means the foliage.Stark wrote:Cause what? Like the tint runs green?fastbilly1 wrote:And I am not buying the current Lord of the Rings since the blurays are very green.
I just wanted to use that word.

Green LOTR:
Very obvious here:

Apparently its not that bad when watching it, that or I could shift my colors on the projector, but Id rather wait until the next printing where they fix the issue.
Thanks for the suggestions thus far.

Any Blu-Ray put out by Criterion Collection is guaranteed to have top-notch visual quality.

I have the extended LOTR blu rays.
You won't notice the green 'tint' without setting the scenes side by side. Trust me, it's not like the blue tint of the 2004 star wars DVDs or anything. It's also only in those early Hobbiton scenes.
Plus, from what I understand, the green hue shift was an intentional directorial choice or something like that.
It really isn't that bad at all, and considering I doubt that they're going to 'correct' it, I don't think you should skip out on the blu rays because of it.

Re: Bluray suggestions for projection
The Dark Knight, since it has you know IMAX shots in it and they're some of the most glorious BluRay images around.
I would second War of the Worlds. Not a lot of people like it, but it's definitely a ride movie with a bunch of crazy shit.
Jurassic Park ... Sadly it only comes in a trilogy pack and the other two are really not very good at all. But the first is astonishing, of course.
Avatar Collector's Edition. Why collector's edition? because it's the full movie and the additional 15 minutes (or so) entirely changes the first and third act to something much more substantial. It almost feels like an entirely different movie. Also it's absolutely gorgeous.
Apocalypse Now
Saving Private Ryan. This movie is insane on the big screen. And, obviously, if you haven't noticed, Spielberg is one of the best big screen guys out there. His movies are usually go big or go home. And blow everything up while you're there.
Up and Wall E
Terminator 2 is like the ultimate action movie, so that's definitely a good choice.
I would say Die Hard ... but, I actually think the BluRay release is pretty lacking (might even be DVD transfers)

Super 8
Limitless
Watched them both a few times and they get better each time (small things you wouldn't see if they weren't HD).
+1 Criterion collection - if you have a favorite, they've done the best job on them.
I plan to buy the Star Trek TNG re-releases after reading what they've been doing to them. The quality's always been sub-par so seeing my favorite episodes polished up like that will be really cool.
Can I ask which projector you got? I've been eyeing the Optoma high-end ones for a long time and recently purchased a Microvision Laser HDMI projector for on-the-road viewing (awesome scanlines, but not good unless in complete darkness).
