Weird Famicom?

Post by Luigiman »

So, I recently received a Famicom as a gift. However, a lot of it is really off, and I can't tell if it's real!!
First, there's no TV/Game or Channel switch
Second, the sticker on the bottom seems wrong
Third, the serial number is off (I think)

But, it looks extremely legitimate, and has a Nintendo copyright on it's motherboard

Is this a real Famicom, a Famicom pieced together from other Famicoms, or an extremely well built Famiclone?

Also, can I play it on American TV?

Not sure ... though the board reads Nintendo, there's no TV/GAME switch. There's a mic on player 2 controller but the face plate (it's not a sticker) on the Famicom lacks the FF logo - I'm not sure. Looks to be a Frankicom.

looks pretty legit.

does it look like the controllers have been soldered? Famcoms are hardwired to the controllers. Maybe the controller case got replaced?

You can get it to work on a US tv. But your gonna need to find a RF cord with the channel change on the box itself.

If you do find one of these RF cords You may only get one channel to use though.

I think JP channels are set differently than US channels. But other TVs that go into the high numbers can get it to work too.

You're gonna need an older tv to make it work properly as well.

It looks to me like a legit Famicom that's been modded with a PAL RF modulator. If that's the case, you won't be able to use this on an American TV unless you add an AV mod to it.

Don't use the original Famicom rf swich. A US NES rf will work perfectly with it. Even on a newer LCD set, you can play a Famicom, you'll just have to manually enter channels 95/96 as those are the channels you'll get the picture on.

The controller connectors are inside but can be removed.

Also, AV mod?

Well that sucks, I don't think I can do that...

Oh well, it looks pretty enough for display

Question, when you switch the Famicom on, is there any indicator on the console that it's on, other than the power button being up?

That's pretty much it, the power switch has an orange stripe that's revealed when you turn it on, but there's no power LED or any other indicator.

Oh ok

If this really is a PAL modified Famicom, is there no way to play it without doing the AV mod?

It doesn's seem to want to work on any channel

If it's not working at all on channels 95 or 96, then there's a very good chance that it's outputting PAL RF. The only way to play it without an AV mod would be to use a multisystem TV, but those aren't exactly commonplace in the US.
