I'm losing interest, and tbh I just can't keep collecting...

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

I'm losing interest, and tbh I just can't keep collecting...

Post by Mephikun »

Yeah. I can't do it. I don't have the money, I don't have a job (blame laws for that, they say I'm too young... yeah right.), and I spend most of the money I get on new gadgets (phones, tablets, etc.), and I mostly play current and last gen games. I've already started to part with my collection, I sold my entire Genesis collection the other day, and I'm trying to get some PS1s I mistakenly bought out of my sight. Emulators are fine for me. I had to use Emulators before, and then I thought "oh, maybe I can actually get the consoles and games!"

...

No. If the new farm laws are put into effect... there goes the LAST job I can get. Everything just gets harder and harder for people under 18 job-wise, daily. And I don't have the room, tbh. My room is the smallest, my sisters share a room (one has pretty much moved out), I have more stuff the store anyway, but I've got the smaller room... And I mean, I can store a couple of consoles and a 13" TV, and my desk, and my futon... but that's pretty much it. And I can't put my stuff downstairs near the bigger TV (29" JVC CRT. I know, we need a new one :P), because there's too much stuff there already. I'd rather focus on getting a couple new games, playing games on Emulators and just doing some PC Gaming, I've mostly been a PC gamer lately, with Minecraft and World of Tanks prying me away from the real world.

I have a lot more to focus on, as well. I graduate from High School in 2 years. I need to find a job of some sort. It's just too much to keep collecting things, and actually play the stuff I buy.

Now onto interest.

I'm losing interest, like I said before, I'm just focusing on modern stuff for now, and phones. I love retro games, but just can't keep buying them. It's way too much, and frankly I'd rather use emulators, get an Xbox 360 controller to PC thing, and use that. Nothing beats the feel of playing it on the actual console, but money comes into play, yet again.

Now, this doesn't mean I'm leaving, I just won't be buying stuff that's retro unless it really catches my eyes. I'll still be in the B/S/T section a lot, buying up a couple games mainly for my Dreamcast from time to time, and buying modern consoles.

I just wasted so much time typing this :P

Money used to be really tight for me, and I did no gaming except emulation.

To make it fun, I would purposely seek out games I couldn't play on an actual console: English translations of Japan-only RPGs, super rare/expensive PC Engine games, ROM hacks (there are some great Chrono Trigger and Zelda ones), etc... This way I didn't feel as if I was "missing out on the console experience" because there was literally no console equivalent.

Another suggestion: Get yourself DOSBox and check out some great abandonware PC games. You can also find free indie games and RPGMaker games all over the 'net.

Don't feel pressured by what anyone else has, you don't need to be a hardcore game collector to appreciate retro games. Hell, as I've said in many other threads, I didn't start collecting until I was 26. Before that I had like 10 games total. You're young and will have plenty of time and opportunities later on.

...I probably would've advised against you selling off your stuff now. Yeah you can't afford to keep collecting right now, but really that's all the more reason to actually play what you've managed to accumulate.

When you do have disposable income and a steady job (again?), you might find that you do want to start collecting again and might regret having sold off all that stuff.

Ey, i'm on the same boat as you too
I'm only 19 and and with college is allmost imposible to get a job, i'm realized that to get all the consoles i want i just need patience i don't need them RIGHT NOW. I started two years ago with only 2 N64 games and now i have more of 15 (basically all the must have games on my opinion) and a couple of SNES games. I also get genesis but the system was broken and i'll sell it with games to get a psp.
If you really think you wont miss your retro consoles them it's fine sell them, but remember to stay 100% shure with this decision sometimes you miss a old console (i miss my PSone  )
So, good luck!

Thanks for the links man :)

I used to do that as well, the Japanese ROMs with English translations (i.e Mother 3)

Yeah, I agree. Hopefully in about 3-4 years I can have a decent job that can fuel my collection.

Nope, never had a steady job (unless mowing the lawn counts ;P).

Yeah, I think I may go the same route as you, get a couple consoles, must have games, and just keep it that yah.

Yeah, I will. I have a PS1 and PSone laying around... PSone has no cables, but I have it all for my PS1.

________

Thanks for all the input everyone. :)

I'll be sure to keep playing what I have and check out DOSBox and Abandonware games.

If you only care about playing them, and not actually owning a physical copy of them, then why not sell off all your old stock? Bear in mind that at some point in your future, when you're in a better place in life, you might want to start collecting again. You might regret getting rid of some of the stuff that you got rid of in the past...

But it's really not worth being unhappy now for some base material pleasure in the future. Considering droids have effective emulators for a lot of old system on them anyways, if you're looking at phones and modern tech, then why spend the money on old games?

Basically if it gets to the point where it affects your quality of life: don't collect. Emulate. I understand the desire to collect, I have a mean materialistic streak, but don't let it affect what you can and can't do with your life.

Also, it sucks that the laws are so stupid where you live- where I live anyone 14 or older can work with their parents permission, and over the age of 16 (I think it's 16) there are no laws restricting work, aside from obvious things like serving liquor and whatnot.

Life doesn't get any easier when you are over 18 either heheh. Good luck though, i'm sure things will smooth out.

Sounds like a good idea.

Recommend you sell the games and get active in some clubs or charities outside of school to keep you busy and be in a better position for college applications next year.

Thanks, man.

Yeah, I used to have a very nice Android phone with a keyboard that I could map controls to, it was really good.

Yeah, it's really strict in Maine :s

I dunno, every year has gotten easier and easier since I was 18 ;)

That being said, that will probably change once I have kids
