Native American Sports Mascots
Re: Native American Sports Mascots
I swear I've seen some anthropology textbooks referring to them as "Amerindians".

Spork. Smog. Vlog. Also, cf. Wikipedia: "The indigenous peoples of the Americas are the pre-Columbian inhabitants of North and South America and their descendants. Pueblos indígenas (indigenous peoples) is a common term in Spanish-speaking countries. Aborígen (aboriginal/native) is used in Argentina, while "Amerindian" is used in Guyana, but not commonly used in other countries. Indigenous peoples are known in Canada as Aboriginal peoples, and in the United States as Native Americans."

I don't know anybody who has a problem with it, and it doesn't make a difference to me. As far as I can see, if they change it they just need to make their mascot less of a caricature and take a more realistic look.
A couple of Mexican friends of mine always jokes that the current mascot looks like the stereotypical Mexican without a moustache and a feather instead of a sombrero.
