I don't know why anyone in Cleveland would want the team to be the Spiders. That name has a history of losing worse than anyone else in the city.

Wikipedia wrote: Stanley Robison publicly announced his intention to run the Spiders "as a sideshow," and fans apparently took him at his word. Through the first 16 home games, Cleveland's total attendance was 3,179, an average of 199 people per game. Due to lackluster ticket sales, other NL teams refused to travel to Cleveland's League Park, as their cut of the ticket revenue didn't cover their travel and hotel expenses. As a result, the Spiders only played 26 more home games for the rest of the season, including only eight after July 1. In so doing, they set a number of negative records, including one, 101 road losses, that is unbreakable under MLB's current schedule. Sportswriters of the day began referring to the team as the "Exiles" and "Wanderers." Their final record for the season was 20–134 for a winning percentage of .130, the worst in baseball history.

I don't if there are many tribes in the Ohio area, but in Spokane, the local tribe wanted to show its support for the local A-ball baseball team, which had been called the Inidians for over a hundred years. One of the logos turned out something like this:

Not sure if Cleveland would go that route, but there are ways to have logos for Native American nicknames to look classy. As a Chicago sports fan, I have no problems with the Blackhawks logo. I think it looks great.

I agree. I hate spiders more than I hate Indians as well.

It's not considered PC. Indians is an archaic term referring to the fact that Christopher Columbus thought he had discovered the Indies. The preferred term is Native American and Indian is reserved for those who are from India.

There's a higher-than-average number of Indians (from India) living in the capital city here, so I need to be able to distinguish between the two types. I usually call people from India Indians, and call the others American Indians.

"Native American" uses less syllables than "American Indian," so it's easier to say. Just sayin'...

...the term Indian has always kinda bugged me a bit. India's on the other side of the friggin' planet. It's just dumb and makes no sense really. I know where the term came from and all, but it's still incredibly silly.

"As of 1995, according to the US Census Bureau, 50% of people who identified as indigenous preferred the term "American Indian," 37% preferred "Native American" and the remainder preferred other terms or had no preference"

It's silly. But most names are and that applies to you Americans.

In standardized testings:
There's no box for "German American". Just "Caucasian". There is no box to check for "Korean American, Japanese American, etc". Just "Asian".

The statistics the American Education System uses to judge intelligence and race are dumber than the kids taking the tests...unless something has changed (I should ask the wife).

But yeah, you get "Native Americans" who are offended even more at the term "Native American" because they see it as a lame ass apology to the Indians...er Americans who were Native. The white man is an non-native American, why the "Native Americans" are simply "Americans". See how dumb this gets?

Like I said with my first post, people have better stuff to do with their time then wax philosophical about this.
